Summary: The year is 1899, and Christian, a young English writer, has come to Paris to follow the Bohemian revolution taking hold of the city's drug and prostitute infested underworld. And nowhere is the thrill of the underworld more alive than at the Moulin Rouge, a night club where the rich and poor men alike come to be entertained by the dancers, but things take a wicked turn for Christian as he starts a deadly love affair with the star courtesan of the club, Satine... A visual feast, but overly in love with its own inventions, and fails to really tell a story worth watching. See it for the set design and bravura turns.
It's easy2 see what teenagers saw in this: 1. It's slicker than an oil spill 2. Frenzied edits give the illusion of explosive dance sequences rather than, u know, actually letting the actual dancers do it (god knows they must have just loved their hard work chopped up in2 a billion cuts)3. It takes the easy (i.e. "cool") way out by using instantly recognizable pop/rock tracks 2 pander2 their coddled tastes rather than, u know, creating NEW music. Now, what were the critics' excuses 4 liking it?
"Moulin Rouge" is a one of a kind vibrant film. A musical one at that. Don't stick your nose up at that though. Baz Luhrmann's visionary directing style intertwined everything that is great here. Overall crowd pleasers don't come as fun, well made and filled with more emotion than this.
Great Musical. Outstanding, magnific, exaggerated, excentric, perfect. Kidman is wonderful, Broadbent as good as we expect from him, Roxburgh excellent. An unforgettable movie, no doubts.
