Summary: Nemo Nobody leads an ordinary existence at his wife's side, Elise, and their 3 children until the day when reality skids and he wakes up as an old man in the year 2092.
Prestigious shit. A short list of films this one shamelessly coppied: Alice in wonderland, Fight clube, Donnie Darko.. If I'd get more pissed in the near future, you'll have a full list.
A fantastic ride: Through the beautiful visuals, the emotional setup and the mere fact that you have no idea where it is going, every scene is interesting and captivating. Even if the ending feels a little rushed, it doesn't take anything away from the experience because it simply feels right.
Oh my god I love this. It's really really intelligent, and really original. It's surreal, it's complicated, it does a bunch of cool little things and effects. But what catapults it beyond just "a neat little gimmicky (I'm not saying gimmicky as a bad thing) film" is the emotion. I laughed a bunch of times, but when it came down to it, the movie knew how to make me sad. Wonderful performances, an interesting story... even though I can't say with 100% authority that I understand it (I think I do).
"Mr Nobody" strives to capture the same "kaleidoscope of truisms" thing as "Synecdoche, New York" but here, instead of surrealist humor and truth, there is humorless nonsense and pervasive self-importance. The problems with the wiring of the writer/director are both so ridiculously convoluted and embarrassingly obvious that I could write ten thousand words debasing him, but it would be a waste of time.
The metaphysical subject matter is a bit difficult to get to grips with, but when you boil it down there's a coming-of-age / teenage love story which works very well, and some contemplative philosophising about life from an old man. Even if the narrative asks too much of the viewer, there are many magical and memorable scenes, and the director uses effects and camera tricks in a way which is inventive and pleasing. Good to look at and good performances from some of the cast. Refreshingly daring.
Nemo says in the introduction that it would be difficult to keep track nine dimensions. Apparently this is also the case for this very film. It starts out very interesting (and confusing) but as we move forward and the different stories unfold, with an unoriginal soundtrack, I began to loose interest. The Anna (pronounced the same backwards) story was the only one who seemed organised and the others just seemed like stuffing. But it is a beautifully shot film and that saves it from failure!
This movie is very weird and strange and original. Some of the story choices work better than others but overall it is a good idea. Jared Leto does good work in the lead role and there are numerous good supporting performances. Overall I recommend the film.
Fuck me this a great film. Its like Kaufman and Tarzem had a lovechild. Hard to fault except the score was a major distraction. Transcending time is something that has always been an interest to me and van Dormael handles it in a very imaginative, very ambitious way that works like a charm, and it's always nice to see the wonderful Kruger. Made me meditate for a while and I came out deciding this is the best possible path for my life, and I'd bet that's all van Dormael can ask from a viewer.
Pseudo-scientific popsci babble. Cliches all over the place: the future is filled with ascetic, overly clean furniture and horribly over the top TV announcers. Incredibly bored at ~33%.
Stunning visually, and a really ambitious theme, but in the end it felt too repetitive, and the acting often overwrought. The production design was impressive but derivative, frequently echoing the Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. A noble failure.
van Dormael knows what's beautiful and what's quirky, and he has a lot of tricks up his sleeve, but they don't amount to a coherent story that has a satisfiying ending. The train of thought in his mind is all over the place, and even though the multitude of stories have all heartwarming tidbids, the movie in general has a huge pacing issue which omits them all. mr. nobody is unfortunately a potential wasted, not bad by any means, but falls far from great.
