Summary: In this family saga, Mrs. Parkington recounts the story of her life, beginning as a hotel maid in frontier Nevada where she is swept off her feet by mine owner and financier Augustus Parkington. He moves them to New York, tries to remake her into a society woman, and establishes their home among the wealthiest of New York's high society. Family and social life is not always peaceful, however, and she guides us, in flashbacks, through the rises and falls of the Parkington family fortunes. (imdb)

A biographical drama of spanning three generations. While the drama is appealing and both Pidgeon and Garson shine, the pace of the story is slow in the middle years.

Wow, Garson is pretty poor in her old age scenes (even if the senior make-up is pretty good). In the flashbacks, however, the actress shines and her chemistry sparkling with Pidgeon. It is Moorehead, however, who is best in show here, as well as the streamlined direction of Garnett. Still, the "present day" scenes feel quite forced and really waste talent (Dan Duryea and Gladys Cooper aren't given much to do).
