This was pretty enjoyable. Like any good murder mystery, it's elaborate and neatly-designed, and everybody is a suspect (which is more true in this than in any other murder mystery). I was surprised at the humorous side this displayed; Albert Finney's detective is eccentric and provides at least a few moments of relief. It's a bit dry, and due to its nature, not rewatchable to a great extent, but it's very solid nonetheless.

This is majestic. Damn majestic. Lumet's direction is as flawless as it could possibly be, the music is fantastic and the photography is just outstanding. But most important of all is this unbelievable cast of excellent actors and actresses. From older stars such as Bacall and Gielgud to newer (then) faces such as Redgrave and Bisset, all deliver completely (most notably Perkins and Bergman). The mystery is fascinating of course, but watching all these great people is enough for me.

My grandmother being a fan of murder mysteries, and my 7th grade maths teacher the same, it was inevitable that I eventually see this. If I do recall, we watched it in my maths class. Poirot was one of my grandmother's favorite detectives. I certainly enjoyed it, loving a good mystery myself - if only because it's in my blood.

Zowie, what a cast! Finney plays it a bit fanatical, and Bacall is a regular gum-snapping floozy. A very good-looking picture, which manages to avoid the claustrophobic feel of most train flicks. In several sequences the music seemed to be the dominant factor. The "spoofy" touches/attitudes were very 70s, and could probably have been done away with. The "mass murder" scene at the end had a certain purgative justness (and even serenity) to it.

A fun whodunit featuring an outstanding ensemble cast. The characters are numerous and varied in their eccentricities, and I think just about everyone would be hard-pressed to figure out the conclusion. There is an element of black comedy that I wasn't expecting and found very relieving. It also uses a train - that classic cinematic device - to great effect. Despite its achievements, however, this film lacks the necessary tension and anticipation that would push it toward greatness.

THE CAST IS MAGNIFICENT, and that goes especially for TOM JONES... I mean Albert Finney. Also Bergman, Perkins and Gielgud, fuck, they were all GREAT. The best Agatha Christie adaptation I have seen.

It may not be rooted in the most realistic grounds, but it's such a light and enjoyable watch. Albert Finney transforms himself with this character. Just one of my all-around favorite ensemble pieces.
