Zowie, what a cast! Finney plays it a bit fanatical, and Bacall is a regular gum-snapping floozy. A very good-looking picture, which manages to avoid the claustrophobic feel of most train flicks. In several sequences the music seemed to be the dominant factor. The "spoofy" touches/attitudes were very 70s, and could probably have been done away with. The "mass murder" scene at the end had a certain purgative justness (and even serenity) to it.

Murder mystery that has some interesting characters and is well casted but that is about as far as it goes. Doesn't push any boundaries. Sits quite firmly as being just a good movie.

This is majestic. Damn majestic. Lumet's direction is as flawless as it could possibly be, the music is fantastic and the photography is just outstanding. But most important of all is this unbelievable cast of excellent actors and actresses. From older stars such as Bacall and Gielgud to newer (then) faces such as Redgrave and Bisset, all deliver completely (most notably Perkins and Bergman). The mystery is fascinating of course, but watching all these great people is enough for me.

I usually hate Agatha Christie adaptations (mostly a loathing for how she writes dialogue) but the fantastic cast of this adaptation completely makes up for it.

I suppose most people already know the story. This is the best version. It feels very literary, but the acting works well within the obvious restrictions.

Given the cast, the source material and the director, this should have been better, but it's still fairly entertaining. The usually excellent Lumet fails to do much for the material -there is no suspense and the constant flashbacks are annoying. The cast is impressive indeed -Finney is hammier than ever, which can be both enjoyable and vexing. The rest of the stars hide behind ridiculous accents. There's a great deal of wry, humorous dialogue, which makes the proceedings considerably more fun.

Spectacular cast, a great script, beautiful cinematography, solid direction...and for some reason it only partially works.

It's never all that gripping, but the unraveling of the mystery is definitely better handled than in most other whodunit films.

THE CAST IS MAGNIFICENT, and that goes especially for TOM JONES... I mean Albert Finney. Also Bergman, Perkins and Gielgud, fuck, they were all GREAT. The best Agatha Christie adaptation I have seen.

A worthwhile whodunit; however, not the best I've seen. The plot was interesting and the cast is huge, but I would have probably enjoyed it more if I grew up watching these actors. I felt Bergman was the best here, but Finney doesn't do a bad job. The opening was done very well by Lumet.

a watchable mystery movie, that has agatha christie's stamp all over it. it feels a bit on the small side and finney looks like a total idiot. there's a reason that mystery novels have evolved since the book came out, because this formula can remain interesting for only so long.

A well made film with an all star cast, that, as with all Lumet's pictures, deals with social justice in a terrific manner. Though the greater good does seem to win out, I can't help but feel the sordid complicitness is a lot darker and scarier that the utilitarian ending would have you believe. A classic for a rainy sunday.

It's filmed like something they show on PBS at 3 in the morning. Looks horrible. Sidney Lumet, what the fuck? I'd still throw it at 60 year old Ingrid Bergman though. In a messed up way this kind of felt like the Oceans 11 movies. The remakes, specifically. Take a medium quality script (or a medium quality novelist,) and shove enough star power through the camera lens to make it into a great movie. I whole-heartedly believe that if you didn't know anybody in this film you wouldn't like it.
