Summary: The story of Christy Brown, who was born with cerebral palsy. He learned to paint and write with his only controllable limb - his left foot. (imdb)
This is perhaps the only film that tells the story of a handicapped person overcoming obstacles that does so without a trace of sentimentality. It also gives a great portrait of a working class Dublin family and features an inspired performance from Daniel D. Lewis and a very good one from Fiona Shaw.
The first half hour is definitely the highlight which manages to not only avoid the ever dangerous Worthy tone but also to be in turn funny, enchanting, gripping and at one point borderline surreal. O'Connor and Day-Lewis give two truly remarkable performances and the film has both humour and some touching moments to make up for a quite out of place bar fight and the the slow losing of steam up to a fairly poor and regretably Worthy end (which, despite being true, the film didn't convince me of)
A magnificent film. Day-Lewis deservedly won an Oscar for portraying Brown. Fricker, also an Oscar winner, is equally luminous as his courageous mother. There are scenes of such power in this film that they will remain with you forever.
Without Daniel Day-Lewis, this movie would suffer. Good thing he's fucking amazing. EDIT: Daniel Day-Lewis is still great but this film leaves a poor taste in my mouth.
Overall Enjoyment: 30/40, Plot/Themes: 15/20, Cinematography/Direction: 15/20, Acting/Writing: 20/20 Follows the life story of a man born with cerebral palsy who overcomes his deficits to become a famous painter and author. Incredible story with some of the most impressive acting I've ever seen. Daniel Day Lewis is incredible.
I had no idea who Christy Brown was before I saw this movie. But Daniel Day Lewis managed to show me a very clear and human picture of just who he was, and tear at my heartstrings along the way. truly an uplifting movie.
Could've gone on longer, I would've liked more detail into the life and emotions of Christie Brown, I felt like it was more about the people around him than him himself. Still very good though.
