Punctuated by typically eccentric Dickensian comic relief -- e.g., Forrester Harvey's drunken mausoleum keeper Durdles, E.E. Clive's officious Mayor Sapsea -- this emerges as a satisfying suspenser, enacted by a more-than-capable cast (particularly Rains as the tortured Jasper), that also offers a deft sketch of 1860s England. While not a true horror film, this incorporates many effectively creepy atmospheric gothic elements, including the crypt set from the original 1931 _Dracula_

Claude Rains sings. Yes, you read that right. Not casually, either, like in the "nuts in May" bit in _The Invisible Man_; he actually *performs*. Unfortunately, that's the only memorable part of this film
