Punctuated by typically eccentric Dickensian comic relief -- e.g., Forrester Harvey's drunken mausoleum keeper Durdles, E.E. Clive's officious Mayor Sapsea -- this emerges as a satisfying suspenser, enacted by a more-than-capable cast (particularly Rains as the tortured Jasper), that also offers a deft sketch of 1860s England.
