Austere and enigmatic film is incredibly well-acted (especially by Ardant) and manages to resolve itself in a more satisfactory way than its U.S. remake, but can't shake the essential coldness at its heart, and suffers from an ultimate lack of insight or focus into the character of the wife. Remains a compelling experience nonetheless; also highlighted by beautifully silky cinematography.

Worth to be seen, at least for Fanny Ardant's thirst to listen to Nathalie's tale of her adventures with her husband.
