Come for the satire of american television news, stay for the bleak showcase of how American entrepreneurship and personal ambition does not give a fuck about whether the goals are in line with what's in society's general interest. Gyllenhall is wonderful as the sociopath that is bound to create havoc regardless what line of work he had ended up in.

I imagine the moment when he first drags a body into a better shot probably gave people chills. Not me. Have you ever tried to position a three year old for family pictures? It's like trying to put a hurricane in a headlock.

The superhero origin problem taken to an extreme. Here, we don't even see Jake Gyllenhaal become Nightcrawler, it's just about his job before he became a blue teleporting monster. Not even a cameo by Mystique!

Part King of Comedy, part Network, with a dash of nocturnal menace thrown in, Nightcrawler is a solidly crafted, nail-biting thriller that invites its audience into the sick and twisted mind of a fame-seeking freelance reporter. Gyllenhaal inhabits the role with a chilling intensity and a focused ruthlessness that lends the film its deliciously depraved energy. One of those "I know you're supposed to hate the guy but deep down you want to invite him to uplift your boring family gatherings".

If I hadn't have already been excited to see this movie, seeing that it was done by the producers of "Drive" gave me a big boost. It's a flick that (mostly) lives and dies on the performance of Gyllenhaal. Good news! He's phenomenal. He's a prick. He's a product of the environment and he's so goddamn convincing as this scumbag character. He just owns it. I can't tell if this is glorifying nightcrawlers, condemning them, a character study, or just bloody entertaining. Doesn't matter, it's great.

Nightcrawler captures the grimy soullessness and moral bankruptcy of today's capitalist culture and elicits a superbly meticulous sociopathic performance by Gyllenhaal (this dude is on a roll). It's less successful as a commentary on sensationalist media but that's a minor gripe for this otherwise thrillingly sleek and darkly demented snapshot of modern society.

Gyllenhaal creates a genuinely fascinating character who summons up some moments of jaw-dropping behaviour; I found myself quietly rooting for him despite some pretty abhorrent acts, and him being a total weirdo. Aside from the great performances, this is beautifully made, beautifully shot, compelling, creepy and unsettling. The whole thing feels hyper-real, yet entirely plausible. Elements remind me of films like Taxi Driver and Network, but it has its own style. Highly recommended.

The latest installment in the X-men universe, Nightcrawler features one of the series's lesser-known mutants--Jake. Jake's mutant power is the ability to drive really fast down the streets of LA without getting a speeding ticket. With his trusty mutant sidekick "Navi," he uses this power to film accidents and then sell the footage to Magneto. His arch nemesis is also a mutant named "Game Over" who possesses the ability to morph rape-vans into video editing facilities.

It's a savvy media satire, taking easy yet valid shots at TV news and the blood thirsty public, and a very well shot crime thriller with that gorgeous night-time L.A. look (think Mann or "Drive"). But the real attraction here is the character of Louis Bloom, a soulless bottom-feeder who speaks only in corporate cliches (he seems like he's spent his whole life thus far watching business seminars online). Gyllenhall is exceptional, both darkly funny and unnerving. Very sharp and engaging stuff.

I'm never going to look at Jake Gyllenhaal the same way again. His performance as an unhinged freelance videojournalist in "Nightcrawler" is transformative in the best and worst ways. The actor sinks into his character amid a bigger-picture story that serves as a condemnation of "it bleeds, it leads" broadcast journalism. Some of the film's early goings are tepid, but things build to a head and lead to a shocking climax.

Nightcrawler is an economic horror story. Lou is essentially Ayn Rand's philosophy taken to its logical conclusion, which makes for a very uncomfortable but also silly viewing experience. I'm not sure how I feel about the cheeky ending, but Jake Gyllenhaal is fantastic. See it.

One of, if not the most realistic portrayal of sociopathy I've ever seen in a film. Gyllenhaal is amazing and is probably in a stronger career bounce-back than McConaughey. After this and Enemy I want to know why he hasn't worked with Cronenberg yet. They seem like a match made in Heaven.

Gyllenhaal creates a memorably menacing creep, a monster that is able to thrive thanks to the ever lowering standards and fear-mongering in the 24-hour-news-cycle culture. Major kudos to Gyllenhaal for completely disappearing into his character, almost overshadowing the great work of Russo and Riz Ahmed. All in all, an atmospheric, uncomfortable and mesmerizing piece of work.

The start of it, you are aware that Gyllenhaal is putting forth a great performance. Then I think about a half an hour in to it, it finally all starts to click in to this powerful thrill ride that pretty much goes up to the last second. I really, really dig this. Nightcrawler expertly carves out a little place for itself, a place of neon, flickering static, brutality, and voyeurism. I've seen tons of movies, and Lou is one of the scariest characters I've ever seen. His actions don't come from wickedness or insanity, they come from a dangerously inflated survival instinct. Lou is perfectly sane, which is absolutely terrifying.

Plainview, Bateman, Bickle - Louis Bloom falls right in line with cinema's most notorious sociopaths, and while the film he's in isn't thrilling or rich enough to reach the iconic status of those others, it still serves a sleek and effective critique of the conditions that allow the misanthropes to thrive. Really dark look of what is ultimately a widespread insatiable social disease, sensational gore, and the lengths those who provide it will go to. I'm sure the drug cartels could learn a thing or two about ruthlessness from Louis Bloom. This and "End of Watch" are bookends to the amazing range of Gyllenhaal's talent. Gyllenhaal is amazingly unnerving as an unstable, creepy fuck. The film might not deserve Taxi Driver comparisons, but he earns his analogy to DeNiro. An ambitious and mostly successful examination of cable news, modern business, and filmmaking by newcomer Gilroy (backed by veterans Newton Howard and Elswit). Jake sells the unhinged CEO jargon, until the end. The ultimate seduction of Nina and the final scene make the social commentary start to crumble apart, but the fiction at least holds up.

Nightcrawler is a movie that takes the idea of "pulling yourself up by your bootstraps" and takes it to its logical extreme. A beyond Oscar-worthy Jake Gyllenhaal plays Lou Bloom as both a boyish, eager to please upstart and a monstrous con-man -- noteworthy is his preference for "Lou" or "Louis" based on whether he's in the position of power or not. Some aspects are ridiculous, but as satire, they're perfect -- if you have to choose which insane sociopath movie out now to watch, go with this.

There are moments of brilliance, like later on when we get to see the behind the scenes of the news station (which would have made a great short film because it summed up the core meaning behind the movie), and Jake gives one of the best performances of the year as a creepy fuck. It lost 10 points for me, maybe because it felt like it dragged a little, and the scene between him and Nina went TOO over the edge and went against the tone of the film up until that point. But it's a great flick.

Lou Bloom can't even be called an anti-hero. He's the symbol of the moral decrepitude of our times: simultaneously fascinating and repulsive. My hope for movie of the year, and as such a disappointment. The thing about satire is, for me, that it should appeal to the person inside of you that you really don't want to be. In spite of powerhouse performances from Gyllenhaal and Russo this movie failed to fully engage me. The storyline is perhaps a bit too linear, and the mood lacking a bit of that haunted big city feel as seen in 'Collateral' or 'Drive'. That said, as a former video journalist, some scenes hit awfully close to home.

Original, intense, gorgeous looking nocturnal thriller with a great lead character played by Gyllenhaal who went full Jared Leto for the role. Character development is great: at first Lou Bloom seems like a weasel who read too much self-help books, but gradually he blossoms into full-blown psychopath (with asperger's, tho I don't think that's possible in reality). Night-time LA provides a great setting, watching that red-sports car speeding on the roads made me wish for 80's synth soundtrack.

The satire is dark and engaging (if a little obvious) and Gyllenhall owns his roll as a twisted personification of American work ethic. The only thing holding Nightcrawler back from true excellence is the tonal inconsistency it faces in trying to be too many things at once. The comparisons prove it: part Network, part Taxi Driver, part King of Comedy, the film plays with many tones without feeling satisfyingly cohesive at the end. Its strengths, however, are impeccable and I highly recommend it.

I was pleasantly surprised by the (slightly) satirical look this movie takes with our societal obsessions. I ignored most of the trailers after I saw the initial and it paid off here, resulting a very high score. I loved Gyllenhaal in what is probably his best role. Russo is good as well. Paxton is underutilized (has anyone ever said this before?). By far bubble boy's best performance of his career. It would be easy to draw comparisons to Taxi Driver and Network but Nightcrawler negotiates itself into it's own right about as well as its sociopath creep-o protagonist. The element of dark comedy is done so well that it slowly builds, almost unnoticeably, until I found myself losing my collective shit by the end. Nightcrawler is all at once a film with a lot on its mind, a way to say it, and a filmmaker behind the camera who knows how to captivate and creep out an audience. What results is an interesting, complicated ride whose plot seems basic at first but whose success lies in the details and in the performance of Jack Gyllenhaal. It's a creepy thrill ride of a movie that goes on for about 10 minutes too long, but otherwise is enthralling and well worth seeing.

A sickeningly appropriate takedown of for-profit news media, the American dream, urban life and the internet age. Despite the broad themes it still acts like a character study, tracking Jake Gyllenhaal's sociopathic character's rise in an industry that breeds much of society's chaos. Gyllenhaal's acting is sadly reliant on the character's ticks rather than the nuances of the material, and though Lou Bloom's idiosyncrasies don't all quite ring true, his effect on the world of the film does.

Spot news is a slippery bit of reporting at the best of times. This finds a balance between satire and commentary so that it never feels too over the top. It provides commentary without holding the audience's nose in it but does so in a pretty thrilling way. Variation on THE KING OF COMEDY: here the focus is on the sensationalist tendencies of commercial television news, the inhuman tendencies of corporate self-actualisation jargon, and the insanely corrosive effect of such perspectives on personal and sexual relations. Quite well done with some darkly funny lines, but there are a few unnecessarily obvious scenes towards the end, as for instance when his partner declares the protagonist's craziness, and a cop declares she is not fooled by his lies.

A wry borderline satirical look at our society and the bloodthirsty nature of ratings hungry news media. Gyllenhaal makes a great wide eyed psychopath. Those empty expressions and exaggerated mannerisms are amazingly accurate if you've dealt with media people before. The plot gets outrageous but the criticism of the media is right on. One interesting aspect of the story is how close it mimics the typical American underdog story about a man down on his luck who makes his own business, gets the girl, survives the competition from a bigger company, and rises the ladder from nothing to success. Gilroy should be applauded for not straying from that cold, dry script. I only wish there was some more liberty with his directing. Fun could have been had with a deeper character expose, the score or occasionally exaggerating the tone. Eg. Something like a mashup of Taxi Driver and Network but without the relief of sympathetic characters. Interesting statement and one that is certainly even more striking today than it was in the 70's but ultimately I didn't enjoy it that much. A friend said "it was good but I felt like I needed a shower afterwards." Indeed!

I don't give a shit about the Oscars, but if anyone deserves it for best actor it's Jake Gyllenhaal for this role. He absolutely nailed it as it as creepy fuck. The only thing missing from this film is a raunchy sex scene with Rene Russo, but otherwise it's almost perfect. The power play scene at the TV station was bloody fascinating to watch. Recommended.

A portrait of a mythical person that is actually how awful you'd have to be to be perfect for local news.

Sensational news sell themselves, we all know that, but of course that's only part of the truth. "Nightcrawler" adds nothing new to this subject, but it is still a pretty good movie, mostly because of Gyllenhaal's performance. He is the incarnation of a job interview and barely human anymore. This leads to some funny and some shocking scenes which work together pretty well.

Jake Gyllenhaal hakikaten muthis. Senaryo iyi, aksiyon sahneleri basarili.

Haven't really seen it, but grew tired of criticker suggesting I would have given it 95.

This is a modern American Psycho or Network--a damning commentary on the times, as well as the personalities & professions that occupy it. The story is amazing not just in the thoughtful and hilarious things it has to say about the world, but also how unpredictable it is as it moves towards its endgame. This is my favorite Jake Gyllenhaal performance, as he brilliantly comes across as an intelligent loner with a plan--even if the plan is horrifying. Highly recommended and fun!

It is frightening how well the nut job role fits Gyllenhaal. His psychopathic eyes visually describes the character brilliantly. It strongly connects to American Psycho and is carried out very well.

The movie was predictable, the plot not that interesting, and the ending really lazy. Jake Gyllenhaal carried this on his back. Remove him, and there's absolutely nothing interesting left: the casting is poor and the cinematography not that special. Luckily, as pointless as the plot feels, the evolution of Gyllenhaal's character is enough to keep you interested all the way through.

Nightcrawlers successes derive from its adept suspense, amazing visuals, great acting and the realism behind it. One of the most fucked up, enthralling, intense movies you will see that doesn't grow unrealistic. Instant classic.

Jake Gyllenhaal plays beyond creepy and that's in the first few minutes of the film. He only ramps it up from there. He sticks his nose, and camera, in where it doesn't belong, going behind the police tape and filming questionable material that the "News" is only too happy to soak up and broadcast. This is pretty good stuff. Well worth a look.

Dark and exhilarating. Gylenhaal's sociopathic portrayal of Bloom is fantastic.

The American-entrepreneurial drive theme is much more interesting than its commentary on sensationalist 24/7 ratings-driven media, with Gyllenhaal's character a walking embodiment of such theme moreso than an actual person (a la Patrick Bateman). It's a great performance given the heavy-handed, matter-of-fact dialogue that is delivered.

While it wasn't perfect, this was a really great, dark film. Jake Gyllenhaal is brilliant. The film's satire of the media and TV news was pretty on point. I do wish they'd gone a bit further with it, though. The cinematography is good, and the direction is cold and distant, which is appropriate for the protagonist. That being said, I feel like a little more absurdity or humour might have elevated the film somewhat. Still, it's an intelligent and immensely engrossing movie.

The lack of Gyllenhaal on the Best Actor nominations list is, if not felonial, at the very least misdemeanoral. Nightcrawler is one of the most exciting, gripping thrillers I've seen in a long time.

Travis Bickel's slightly less mental cousin becomes a news man. Killer performance by Gyllenhaal, entertaining and creepy throughout.

Nightcrawler is one of my favourite films of 2014 and it's one of the most refreshingly original pieces of filmmaking in recent years. Jake Gyllenhaal gives a career best performance to date. He embodies his role to perfection and physically and vocally he is a terrifyingly convincing psychopath. Satirically he reminded me very much of Christian Bale in 'American Psycho'. The streets of L.A. haven't looked this good since 'Drive' and all round the direction & cinematography is slick & stunning.

Will try not to think how Gyllenhaal wasn't completely robbed of an oscar nomination here (truly unbelievable). For me, this is the 2014 equivalent of Videodrome, not trying to be quite as prophetic yet covering similar territory. L.A. becomes a creepy playground for Lou Bloom who can;t help but root for as the anti-hero. Embrace the weird.
