Summary: In a futuristic, state-run society controlled by "Big Brother" in which love is outlawed, employee of the state Winston Smith falls for Julia, and is tortured and brainwashed for his crime. (IMDb)
This looks sort of old fashioned now. It's vision isn't that terrifying, after what we've been through in the last ten years. It isn't helped by the fact that Jan Sterling and Edmund O'Brien have no chemistry together. Only Michael Redgrave gives a performance worthy of the Orwell original.
If you are going to watch one of the 1984 Big Brother movies, this is the one to watch. It at least tells the story in a complete and understandable way even though it is quite outdated. Unlike the remake made in 1984 it satisfactorily conveys the original story. I can't give it very high marks, but it does outshine the remake with good storytelling however the production quality is very poor.
Some really cool imagery, and good acting all around. It feels a little bit weakened by how by-the-numbers it is as an adaptation of the book, however.
