We've seen betters from Coens. It's a good movie, but still overrated; and definitely not the best movie of '08..

Sharing the writing credit as always and sharing the directing credit as they only began to do with _The Ladykillers_, the brothers were smart to cut down the social commentary -- the Decline of Western Civilization as viewed by an aging third-generation lawman -- to a single block of voice-over at the outset, and to sprinkle any additional such commentary lightly into the dialogue ("Once you quit hearing 'sir' and 'ma'am,' the rest is soon to follow").

Confident is the first word that comes to mind. Masterpiece is another. Javier Bardem's Anton Chigurh is the stuff of nightmares' nightmares. Staying nearly word-for-word faithful to Cormac McCarthy's novel, the Coens made a film that stands among, and, perhaps, atop their best, bringing their undercurrent of black humor to relieve the almost unbearable tension they can create. Easily one of the year's best.

Incredible tension throughout (aside from the relatively tranquil ending) and this is coming from someone who had read the book and knew what was going to happen. Javier Bardem nailed Chigurh and the scene where he sneaks up on Woody Harrelson's character will forever be imprinted on my psyche as Silence of the Lambs had when I was younger.

About as good as the book (which wasn't). More of that faux-Hemingway Cormac McCarthy crap. Bardem was like the guy in Puma Man, with the accent of Latka Gravas (or maybe Ricardo Montalban). All of this stuff was already done to death 60 years ago--and much MUCH better. And every time Woody Harrelson "acts" I always wait for Carla Tortelli to come in from offstage and swat him on the head (now there's a man who fully deserved to die).

One of the Cohen Brothers best. Javier Bardem's Anton Chigurh joins Hannibal Lecter and the film character you would least want to have coming after you.

No Country is one of those odd movies where everyone saw the same thing and most people even thought the same things, yet everyone has different feelings about it. Some hate it for its refusal to stay on "track A" until the end, some can't wait to see it again so it makes sense, but I was pleased just seeing a film surprise me in an age where even pretentious art films have rules and limits. Besides you got the best suspense film of the year, before you get 30 minutes of dream logic.

Undoubtedly served by great acting and cinematography, this is a film that leaves the viewer perplexed at first. The relentless tension and uncertainty make it even more enjoyable. In the end, however, it does not quite convince.
