Summary: As a kid Pim dreams of a better life, imagining princesses and beauty queens. But when Pim turns 16 he dreams of Gino, the boy next door, instead. Ever since they were children there has been this tension between them. Now Gino is Pim’s motorcycling hero. Cold mockery, little humiliations and tiny bits of hope make up Pim’s life. Top badass moment? Pim burning his shoe-box of ‘mementoes’ on the beach, before running off into the sea naked. I prefer to work out my frustrations with life in the mosh-pit, but hey, each to their own. Burning things is a classic way to make a break with the past; irreversible, final and violent. It’s always good to make a fresh start, just so you can bugger things up again from scratch. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.
Echoing, for me, in ways both stylistic and thematic but not all at once, The Long Day Closes, Ma Vie en Rose, Wild Reeds, and Come Undone, this film therefore seems to be wearing a lot of borrowed clothes and often stumbles to dead ends, try as it might to remain "novelistic." Still, it's nice to see a young gay lead character who's not a victim and the film's outdoor shots of the seaside are beautiful.
