Summary: A young travelling woman and a older educated, solitary man close a deal: food in exchange of work. But there is one condition: no personal contact, no questions. Who will be the first one to break the deal? (bavaria-film-international.de)
Really lovely. The only thing I can fault it for is that the way it's edited can be unintentionally confusing sometimes. That said the very same editing style helps add to the mood of the film, you can feel it undulating, pulsing. The film's look at solitude is excellent and really resonated with me, the performances and visuals are both strong and the final few minutes of the film are remarkable. I can see this one growing on me on a rewatch, and I'm already very fond of it.
While a story is definately a rare one and has a way of capturing the feel of the travelling woman, I found the movie way too slow-paced and pointless (in certain spectres) to be enjoyable. The idea and the plot is there, but it all just fades away in a blush of slow, cloud-covered Irish countryside with short, senseless dialogues. I applaud the themes of solitude, society and a strange bond between the girl and the farmer though. Good potential, but not well spent in my opinion.
"Two loners in an Irish coastal house negotiate their emotional distance in this debut feature, with an implausible script undermining strong performances and visual ambition." - Bill Weber
