This is one of the most graceful and romantic movies I've ever seen. If you're expecting a typical Hitchcock thriller, you may walk away disappointed, but it's a fantastic romance combined with a clever and wonderfully executed espionage plot. Could there possibly be a more graceful and classy couple than Grant and Bergman? Grace Kelly could stand in, I suppose...

Notorious is a side-step for Hitchcock - focusing on romance as much as drama including a taste of his expressionist roots. Good movie, setting, and plot albiet with a few holes.

An enjoyable mix of romance and thriller, with some great cinematography by Hitchcock. However, I think the scene transitions and conclusion are missing something, especially compared to Hitchcock at his peak a decade later.

Brilliantly performed but somewhat cold Hitchcock outing feels like a dry run for VERTIGO in its stark plotting and generally unpleasant characters (tellingly the most loathsome in Rains arguably ends up the most sympathetic!) Grant's atypically nasty, cynical characterization is a definite highlight, but with no 'everyman/woman' at the centre, the film becomes difficult to fully embrace, despite featuring some of Hitch's best set-pieces (the key at the bottom of the staircase is a stunner!)

Another Hitchcock film that's easy to watch, rate and adore because it makes few missteps along the way. The story takes a while to establish itself, but the result is a enjoyable and sumptuous romantic thriller. Cary Grant was probably the Tom Cruise of his time (can't believe he stole the concept for his shitty MI:2), only far more slick, intelligent and talented, both him and Bergman are a joy to watch. One of Hitchcock's best!

As I was watching I was absolutely bored until the moment Ingrid ingratiated herself with the Nazi's. The two leads fell in love so quickly I was absolutely baffled. I felt no connection with either character up to that point, and only began to enjoy the romantic plot halfway through Alicia's journey into fear. Hitch is obviously more well known for his suspense and thrills, and he managed to capture those moments extremely well and the ending left me completely satisfied.

Although Hitchcock was known as the master of suspense, some of his best films didn't have a lot of suspense in them. Including Notorious. There are some suspenseful moments: the wine cellar scene manages to fill me with dread every time. But the real tension here is the sexual/romantic tension in the love triangle of Grant, Bergman, Rains. It's quite a while before the espionage elements come into play, but one doesn't mind at all because the interplay between the characters is so fascinating.

Very quintessential Hitchcock, a "romantic thriller" of the sort that he favored and excelled in. It's a rather good Hecht script and very nice cinematography, but still really overrated.

Every time I see this, it gets better. The push and pull between Bergman and Grant throughout the film is really a joy to watch, as they both seek to engage one another, yet are constantly ready to protect themselves from harm, whether that be emotional (Bergman) or professional (Grant). I find this Hitch's most satisfying film, precisely because so much of the suspense is tied up in this central relationship. And of course, Claude Rains is great as always.

Found it a very slow the first time and I still think it's a little thin, but the excellent performances compensate. The parallel romantic feelings of Alex and Devlin are superbly executed and manage to build enough suspense and tension to carry the film. The film is also stunningly shot, especially at the beginning, the scene of Bergman waking up near the beginning is one of my favorite visual sequences ever.

At first i felt a bit disconnected from the two main characters and i wasn't really rooting for anyone but the film slowly grew on me till about 60% into the film. From there it was an absolute pleasure to watch. Both Grant and especially Bergman performed really really well. Add some Hitchcock and you get a very well done simple romantic suspensful thriller.

I always thought Hitchcock pictures were less like drama and more melodrama--especially as his conflicts can come across as nighttime soap opera plots. But here, he really does justice by giving Bergman great scenes where she has to overcome substance abuse, sexism, and gaslighting. And the spy suspense is there too! It can be a little uneven sometimes as the storytelling can be clunky with exposition and payoffs. But in the end this is a great template for future Bond/Mission Impossible films.

"Notorious" is not my favorite Hitchcock film but it's nevertheless an eerie, suspenseful, well-written and elegantly directed romantic thriller. Definitely among the Master's most restrained efforts, it benefits from Bergman's splendid performance and Hecht's sharp script to build towards a relatively tame but satisfying conclusion. It's a compelling, fulfilling film but it lacks the directorial fireworks that make many of Hitch's other offerings so irresistible.

One of Hitchcock's best, but I'm sure you knew that. Cary Grant is as great as ever, Ingrid Bergman is great, but it is really Claude Rains' show. He gives off a performance that is, I dare say, kinda beautiful. Even with a film as old as 1946 I still found it quite suspensful, and Notorious had an absolutely fantastic ending that is quite unforgettable. And with brilliant performances on the part of Carey Grant, who became one of my favorite actors after this film, and Ingrid Bergman Notorious is easily in my top 50 films of all time.

The story turns on smug Cary Grant giving Bergman - who he is in love with - over to the Nazis while biting his tongue. He lets this downhearted and blindly loyal woman be married and poisoned just because of protocol. She goes ahead to prove what fools they both are. That some sort of patriotism plays a role is just shoe-horned in among other empty screenwriting ideas. I find all of this maddening. Also, because it's a love story, the properly great final sequence ends on the wrong characters.

Hitchcock and Grant's efforts are rock solid, if a bit familiar and on better display in other collaborations. It's Bergman who's especially fun to watch. This is especially true in early scenes, which allow her to be loose and playful with her character's despondent debauchery. As the film progresses, it becomes one of those showcases Hitchcock's casual expertise in making the simplest plot elements, and the props and set dressing that represent them, the stuff of grand suspense.

The first half feels a little glacial at times and the head-over-heels romance is very forced to start, but from there it develops more naturally, believably (and painfully) over the course of the film. Hitch is masterful with the camera as always and the scenes of tension are as effective as ever. This won't be making its way onto my favourites list, but overall it's a solid entry in the Hitch Canon and one I would be happy to watch again.

My only complaint is that Devlin and Alicia fall in love almost immediately with no build-up, but other than that it's an almost flawless piece of escapist cinema. The cast is great, giving nuanced performances, Hitchcock's formalist camerawork and editing is both breath-taking and effective and the story has just enough depth and intelligence to be entertaining and still leave room open for interpretation and discussion. And that ending shot, wow, haunting, possibly my favourite in any film.

Oh my god these spies are so bad at being spies. Even putting aside Cary Grant's passive-aggressive tsundere bullshit, they're sloppy and give Ingrid Bergman bad and vague instructions and just kind of throw her at the problem. I can't imagine real-life federal agents are any better, either. But yeah, this movie's high reputation is deserved; Ingrid Bergman is fantastic as ever, and I love how the plot is driven, not by flaws in a chessmaster's plan, but by normal human fuckups.

Alfred Hitchcock, who you may have heard of, is famous for such classic films as "Psycho", "The Birds", "Rear Window", and "Vertigo". This movie doesn't even hold a candle to those, it's so slow and sparse it would be better off in a ten minute featurette, unfortunately it isn't. This movie does end up being bearable in the last twenty minutes, but only bearable, and only for twenty minutes.
