Summary: A group of men parachute into Japanese-occupied Burma with a dangerous and important mission: to locate and blow up a radar station. They accomplish this well enough, but when they try to rendezvous at an old air-strip to be taken back to their base, they find Japanese waiting for them, and they must make a long, difficult walk back through enemy-occupied jungle. Shockingly dark and realistic for its time, with great direction and a strong character driven story. The acting was very convincing as well, and the photography was occasionally inspiring. Some of the most interesting aspects however were the various suspensful defensive, offensive, and invasion sequences. P.S: There's an excessive amount of Japan bashing, but honestly it's kind of hard to blame them (think 1945).

It all comes together in this one: Walsh gives us vivid action sequences that make us understand the larger battlefield strategy, Howe photographs the jungle with hallucinatory precision, and the acting is uniformly excellent, particularly a subdued Henry Hull and Erroll Flynn in what may be his deepest and richest performance. His Captain Nelson is so full of quiet strength, so vulnerable and moved by the death of his men, that he continually surprises and impresses us.
