Occident tells, in mosaic mode, three different stories which happen at the same time, interconnect and cross each other, with each story adding a new perspective on the previous one. Mungiu uses humour and lightness of touch to make a comment about early post-communist Romania, a depressing landscape resulting from the collision of the former communist world with the new and flamboyant capitalist offer. A charming film that produces quite a few chuckles. Mungiu's comedy does not come close to his dramatic masterpieces, but he can be forgiven - in general, the combination of drama and humor is terrifyingly ambitious and it's a good try, the relieving part being that the acting isn't theatrical - The Pitfall of comedydramas. Choice of music is heartwarming.

28 Mayis 2012 & Film, Romanya'nin komunist rejimden sonra yasadigi sosyal sarsintiyi ayni anda gerceklesen uc hikaye ile cok guzel anlatmis. Mungiu'nun senaryosu ayrintili kurulmus, basarili. Ayrintilar o kadar fazla ki, birkac kez izlenebilir. Drami da komedisi de cok yerinde, cok dozunda. Gercekten gulduren, ucuz mizah yapmayan, kaliteli sahneleri mevcut.

Very nice, though it does weaken in the third segment. Mungiu shows promise in his feature debut and he would make good on that promise in his next films.
