This is the second movie in a row I've seen based on a W. Somerset Maugham story, and though these movies allegedly explore sexual double-standards and the morality of the day, they come off like sexist diatribes in which a slutty women is beaten to the ground over the course of the story. In Rain, she confirms her poisonous qualities by seducing the priggish missionary at the end, and in Of Human Bondage she never wavers from being a careless, spiteful wench.

Had enough interesting elements to keep me going, but it was not pleasant to watch. The main characters are almost completely unlikeable.

A movie that held my interest initially, with an exceptional performance by Leslie Howard; but unfortunately I grew weary of waitress Mildred not to mention Carey's gullibility, and it lost steam for me towards the end. Overall, a disappointment.

Ew. Ugly film.
