One would never guess that Richard Attenborough was making his directorial debut with this fantasia on World War I--his blending of theatricality and realism, of musical moments and battle scenes, is often remarkable. And if there are slow spots and some heavy-handed moments, the abundant variety of the music, Donald M. Ashton's excellent production design, Gerry Turpin's striking cinematography, and the consistently excellent cast (a Who's Who of British talent) more than compensate.

Masterful anti-war treatise; amazing that director Attenborough came out of the gate with a debut so risky, so daring & so accomplished. Mix of realism and theatricality succeeds wonderfully, and even reminds of ACROSS THE UNIVERSE in a few sequences. Top cast are all superb, with Smith, Olivier and V Redgrave standing out - but the greatest plaudits go to Mills, bringing a real heart & humanity to his character. Great use of the widescreen leading to the final shot: a hell of a curtain closer!
