Perhaps the best of all Hollywood musicals. Great script, great direction, great music, great performances.

gene kelly is pretty good, but the plot is so thin and the song and dance is so boring that it makes this movie drag on and on. there is no suspension of disbelief, because the transition between music and traditional scenes is so badly done that it's cringe worthy. the last twenty minutes are the only watchable ones in the movie, and had the entire thing been that good this movie would have definitely been at the very least tolerable.

Considering that this is coming up to 60 years old it's packed with some great numbers and should bring a smile to anyone's face.
Not as punchy or quick paced as the stage show this does struggle a little compared to contemporary filmed musicals but is well worth watching.
Some great backdrops and glimpses of New York providing a time capsule as well as a damn good film.

More sexed-up than Singing In The Rain - not the greatest movie, but a terrific musical!

When people say they hate musicals, this is exactly the kind of thing they have in mind. Everything is so painfully corny and exaggerated, without any charm. The jokes are bad and the situations are stupid and even the characters aren't very likeable. A few of the songs are decent, but most of them are blah and a couple are even annoying. The dance routines are uninspired. And even with the racy undertones, it's all just so gosh-darned wholesome. An obnoxious and joyless experience.

I can never see enough Gene Kelly movies. The addition of Frank Sinatra makes it even more entertaining.

I'll admit there were a few good laughs, some intentional, others not so much. But in spite of that, and the charm of Sinatra and Kelly, most of the film falls flat. The musical numbers have good ideas behind them but their staging is mixed and every one of them goes on for way too long. The rest of the story is dull and thin, making everything that doesn't bring a laugh groan-worthy. Add in some obvious filler scenes and you get a forgettable film.
