Summary: Drazen Petrovic and Vlade Divac were two friends who grew up sharing the common bond of basketball. Together, they lifted the Yugoslavian National team to unimaginable heights. After conquering Europe, they both went to America, becoming the first two foreign players to attain NBA stardom. But with the fall of the USSR on Christmas Day 1991, Yugoslavia split up. War broke out between Petrovic's Croatia and Divac's Serbia, and the two men, once brothers, were now on opposite sides of a civil war. (imdb)

Top tier sports doc. The events really play out like a Shakespearean tragedy, and Divac is such a likable figure that it's hard not to get weepy as he relates the story of war and death decimating a once-glorious friendship.

Another solid entry in the 30 For 30 series, Once Brothers utilizes the tried and true formula that made The Two Escobars such an interesting documentary, giving heart and politics equal attention.

A pretty great basketball documentary. It's an incredibly tragic story where the division of a country also broke up two guys who were best friends. I didn't know much about this story as I was a bit young to follow politics, but it's incredibly interesting to look back on.

Well this is much more than a basketball documentary. I knew Divac, Drazen, the dream team of Yugoslavia. I had watched their legendary win against Russia in the finals on tv at the time. I knew about their career but I had no idea about their friendship and grudge, what kind of man they were, what they went through and how they have suffered. Sad story this is.

Perhaps the best basketball documentary ever, even surpassing "Hoop Dreams". Does a great job presenting various emotions, whether it's the youthful camaraderie among the Yugoslavian national team, amazement at Petrovic's play, the tragedy of the civil war, the grief and sadness of lost friendships, and in the end, Petrovic's untimely death. It does an equally good job at connecting basketball to recent European history and politics, showing how it affects even those indirectly involved.
