Summary: Running from the law after a bank robbery in Mexico, Dad Longworth finds an opportunity to take the stolen gold and leave his partner Rio to be captured. Years later, Rio escapes from the prison where he has been since, and hunts down Dad for revenge. Dad is now a respectable sheriff in California, and has been living in fear of Rio's return. (imdb)

A good, almost classical plot with some good scenes. However, with the exception of a couple of memorable scenes, the result is somewhat boring due to a so-so script.

Marlon Brando looked a tad out of place and silly, homoeroticism is rife and makes it hard to take some of the scenes seriously, the script is a bit poor at points, Pina Pellicer was awful and Karl Malden a tad too enthusiastic (though he and Brando were good together) and the music was a bit drab. It was all really watchable though and the opening act as well as the first time Malden and Brando meet up are both good fun.

My opinion on this has changed greatly within a year or so...it is a little too long, but it's an intriguing and compelling creation for Marlon Brando to direct, never to make a film again, one stocked up with great character actors and clearly influenced by a murkier morality that Westerns would continue to have even now.
