Summary: Seymour 'SY' Parrish has been doing photo development for 20 years. He has a vast knowledge of modern photography and develops photos at a local department store for a living. But SY lives a sad and lonely life and begins spying on the Yorkin family, his biggest customers who seem to have everything in the world. SY begins to feel that he wants to be in the Yorkin's life, but when he discovers that the Yorkins are not as perfect as they seem, he becomes a man on a mission to expose the imperfections of the Yorkin family that could tear them apart. Effectively tense and, as nearly all reviews say, creepy. Well photographed and edited, with a good score. Unfortunately, the climax is unsatisfying, and, worse, appends a trite "explanatory" conclusion (in other words, the filmmakers failed to learn the lesson of "Psycho"). Nevertheless, a fair attempt at creating a modern example of what Robert Phillip Kolker calls (referring mainly to films of the 1970s) the "cinema of loneliness."

It's biggest flaw is that it's out of it's time. I just wrote a bad review to "There Will be Blood" for some of the same reasons that this movie deserves a good review. It's not Se7en, it's not Silence of the Lambs, there's no gore or horror in the modern sense. That said, let the immersion happen, let yourself just watch without expectation, and without totally blowing you away, it becomes very entertaining and isn't avoid-eating-beforehand disgusting. Also, excellent acting.

While no classic, this movie succeeds in what it sets out to do. It creepy and unsettling, with Williams pretty darn good.

This is NOT a thriller. Robin Williams needs to stick with what he does best: Comedy. Every second of this movie is painful.
