It starts off with a whirlwind of exciting, twist-filled action and climaxes with a classic noir ending. The languid pace of the middle section in Mexico may turn some viewers off, but I found it gave the characters room to breathe and grow, and lent the film a lot of flavor. There's a wonderful unpredictability to the story, and even when little is happening plotwise, an air of tension hangs over the picture. The balance of grim fatalism and lush romanticism struck just the right chord with me.
