It's dragged down by the romance subplot and the overly grandiose soundtrack, but otherwise this was a damn fine, moody Western. It's looks rather gorgeous at times, and so refreshingly green! Costner is servicable and Robert Duvall is simply great. The final shootout is the big, bloody cherry on top.

The final shootout is as exciting and well-choreographed as any on film. Duvall does what he does best, and so, for that matter, does Costner, both as actor and director.

Cool showdown, but the dialogue's pretty generic and the score is just cheesy and unnecessary most of the time.

Something about Costner in the wild west brings out the best of him. Duvall and Bening do a fantastic job as well. Probably the best Western of the 21st century so far. The scenery will make you feel like you are a cowboy; very beautiful.

I've never seen a movie that put more honor and just plain righteousness on the screen. Along with some great shoot 'em up action!

I don't like westerns. I generally find them too boring and predictable. But Open Range is somehow different. Maybe it's the unusually high production value, or that Costner and Duvall are so natural as cowboys that it doesn't seem like they're acting. Or that despite a less-than-quick pace, the characters are interesting enough and there is enough happening that you don't get bored. The fantastic gunfight certainly helped as well. Hopefully there will be more westerns like this.

Strives to be a great movie but ends up cliche and bland.

What a great western. It's totaly carried away by kostner en duvall. A slow paced build up to a phenomenal shootout climax. Wow!

Costner, although terrible as an actor does have decent capabilities as director. Unfortunately the whole thing feels like a boring, pale version of Unforgiven. Needed more Gambon.
