Orphan is a fascinating thriller, one which will hopefully convince you that there is such a thing as good child acting. Isabelle Fuhrman is excellent in her role as Esther, and brings the character to life. Her character, as well as the characters of her adoptive parents, is interesting, and there are enough issues with each one to make you care for them. You hope to see them make it through to the end, even if you don't see a way that they will.
Fucking amazing! The nastiest, weirdest "mainstream" horror film I've seen in a long time, inherently trashy and bizarre yet still beautifully acted and edited. Isabelle Fuhrman-as-Esther is an fucking icon.
I though the pacing of this film was a little slow and that the ending was a little messy.Overall I found this film entertaining but probably won't watch this again.
Creative thriller with an amazing twist. Farmiga and Sarsgaard have great chemistry and do well in this genre. Isabelle Fuhrmann is outstanding as the orphan with plenty of secrets. Highly recommended.
First, it seems like a Omen-like film but in the end it makes you scared of all little people. The kids acted really well and the one playing Max was so adorable!
"Despite director Jaume Collet-Serra's apt use of running children's laughter for jolt scares, the suspense generated from Esther's early lunatic behavior is of a mild, amusing variety." - Nick Schager
Although it didn't thrill that much for a thriller, it did have a decent atmosphere of suspense. It made me watch until the end and satisfied me somehow. The script earns the description "suspense". (That's all I can tell without giving spoilers.) This won't be that great thriller which makes you jump every other second, nor will you, after watching it, run around telling people how great it was. But it is a decent enough choice for a thriller, even if it's not the best choice.
The old "creepy child" ploy, eh? It is, in fact, quite creepy and disturbing. It should be too obvious, the explanation should be too preposterous, but they play it so straight you find yourself wondering if it's not just all a misunderstanding - obviously a child who dresses like a cartoon villain can't be really bad, right? The director has studied his early Cronenberg (particularly The Brood) and it's carried by the creepiest child actor performance I've seen since Let The Right One In.
