Summary: A young Muslim woman is separated from her family during the migration of millions between Pakistan and India after India's independence from Britain in 1947. Her life is saved by a Sikh man who jeopardises his own life to protect her. During a time of extreme racial, ethnic and religious tension, the relationship they forge is found objectionable by nearly everyone.
