Somewhat intriguing in it's impenetrability but it's so dull I doubt I'd watch it again. Ultimately unsatisfying.

(Rewatch) Kind of scattershot and hard to follow, even for late-period Godard, and not his best from this era, even if otherwise it has all the elements i love (except maybe lacking in seagull cries?). Somehow simultaneously even more dense but also strangely diffuse than usual, more a collection of cool little moments than anything even vaguely resembling a coherent whole, although i suppose this could be said about almost all his work from this period.

Godard draws some parallels between love and work, comments on the plight of workers and makes an 8 1/2 type of self-referential film. However, for every scene that raises your interest, there's another one to chase it away. It's a relentlessly messy work. A lot of this shit is really irritating or really dull, even when it does make sense. Also, it's perfectly fine to make a movie without a story, but when you're constantly telling the audience there's no story you're just a pompous asshole.

Theme is good; film is bad.

A complete mess of a film. The acting is good but the film is so disjointed, the story so meandering and the direction so mundane that it serves no purpose. I think the film is trying to make some point about people's passion for work for art and for love, but frankly whatever that point was went over my head.

Hopelessly pretentious and boring to boot. Not quite as annoying as some of Godard's other later works, but pretty tedious.

I honestly don't know what to say about this one but I liked it. It's not as difficult as I expected it to be after what I heard about 80s Godard. It just kind of goes along and then it ends with some moments of beauty dropped in here and there.

It may be one of the founding films of narrative post-modernism, destroying the center but nevertheless trying to create a disperse pseudo-structure. In that sense I adore its craft and meticulously calculated uncalculatedness. But the question is: should an artist stand for strict principles and defend them no-matter-what or embrace novelty despite seeming to be an apologist for the new ideology (post-modern neo-liberalism in this case)? As far as I'm concerned surely it's not the latter.
