Kind of ok, but I expected much more. Fabulous concept, but they stuck by the old jokes mostly. We had some renewing aspects and a handful of laughs, but not enough to make this one unforgetable.

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost were pretty good and the movie was funny here and there, but I don't think the world needs any any more CGI characters, especially ones voiced by Seth Rogan that make fart jokes.

Like their earlier movies it's a labour of love, a wall-to-wall barrage of homages, nods and gags that work both as references and within this story, and fans of sci fi from the last 50 years will definitely find something to love here. It doesn't quite have the same zing as their earlier movies though (Edgar Wright was busy shooting Scott Pilgrim). But if you've always wanted to hear a country & western version of the Star Wars cantina theme, it's hard to give this one a miss.

fun and original alien story with great comedy and, although a bit cheesy once or twice, equally great emotional and honest moments.
liked the writing, I mean, the movie changes gears here and there, which is really cool...very fun stuff. also: how good is Blythe Danner in this? :o

Much better than I expected. The nerd humor of Frost and Pegg's characters feels a little stale, but the idea of a foul-mouthed, smoking, and otherwise anthropomorphic alien is hilarious. Seth Rogan's voice acting for Paul is almost perfect, his deadpan delivery and sarcasm creating a great contrast to the responses of humans encountering an alien for the first time. When the film stumbles its in tender moments, which Rogan can't pull off, or its mean-spiritedness towards evangelicals.

I think it kind of proves for me how big a factor Edgar Wright was in how good Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz were (personally I didn't enjoy Paul nearly as much). A lot of the humour here just seemed so less distinctive and more mainstreamy. Admittedly though I did almost squeal in delight at the Close Encounters of the Third Kind reference, but when the best bit of a film is a reference to another film then there's something quite wrong with it... Still, I found it amusing enough, I guess.

There's something off about 'Paul'. I wanted to love it, but from the trailer to the end credits, I couldn't help but feel like it tries too hard. Whether it's Frost and Pegg's nerdy archetypes or the foreseeable, unnecessary twist at the end - it just doesn't feel natural. This wouldn't be a problem for another movie about a couple nerds who find an alien in the desert, but 'Paul' tries to get sentimental, and when it does, it doesn't feel earned. Aside from that, it's enjoyable, but not great.

Storywise it's predictable, uninspired, unoriginal, unengaging and simply not very good - but the jokes are, for the most part, hilarious, and in the end that's the main point of a film like this. Pegg and Frost's other works are still better, though.

It's easy to WANT to like "Paul." As movie nerds we like the cast (Weaver, Rogen, Wiig, Bateman, Lynch, Hader, etc) because they've been in great comedy/scifi movies. We like Simon Pegg & Nick Frost because they've made great comedies too, but also because they are like us. They LOVE movies. But Paul suffers because of it. They have written a movie that is a little weighed down by all the winks&nods to other iconic films. It's a great homage, but too much to make Paul a great film on its own.

This is a really fun science fiction movie with a ton of references to other films. It is no surprise that Simon Pegg and Nick Frost work well together and there are numerous other funny people in the cast. There are many funny scenes in this film and if you blink you might miss a reference.

Mottola can't do much with a uninspired script but, with a great cast (I really love Kristen), he actually achieves a couple of nice nerd gags (Frost as the Nebula winner is the best one). Not enough. This should have given us much more, though.

while pegg and frost have taken a major step down from their earlier efforts this does entertain quite well. rogen does a good voice job, and the writing is ok, but i long for the old days when the british humor shone through and it was pure comedic gold.

It's hard not to like Pegg, Frost and Wiig in whatever they do, and the film mostly works because of them. However, the pop culture references seem a bit too obvious at times, and the humor occasionally stoops to the lowest common denominator. Also, it awkwardly seems to want to say something important about science vs. intelligent design, but never quite completes the thought. Still, it's fun enough to enjoy.

This is honestly exactly what I was hoping for when I heard about this movie. It very successfully blended sci-fi, buddy comedy, and homage together. It could be subtle with the nerd humor on second and then hit you over the head with it the next which kept it fresh and unpredictable for me. I did have to take a few points away just because it got kinda preachy about evolution. Also to be noted for those reading this, I am biased because I would totally go to comic-con if I had the money.

Just not that funny. Some of the more obscure sci-fi references were probably lost on me - the ones I got raised a smile, but they were simply spread too thin to keep me interested over 100 minutes. Also, was there really any need for that much swearing? I don't mind bad language in context, but here it sounds particularly forced and awkward.
