The subject of my film thesis, this film grabbed my attention like few before or since. The often stilted performances by the leads just adds to the atmosphere. I've seen a few movies that ask the viewer to sympathize with (or at least understand) a serial killer, but this one is by far the most effective. One I will watch again and again.
What a smart suspense thriller that appears to be centered around voyeurism and obsession, but at the heart proves to be more of a psychological breakdown of a man's troubled past and his methods in dealing with it - by obtaining tangible evidence of raw emotion. My favorite element of this movie is the perpetual voyeurism; the viewer watches through the vantage point of a mad man and cannot look away.
ends up emotionally aloof 'cause it's contrived and badly scripted, and this inevitably makes it less insightful than the lurking subtext in hitchcock it attempts to spell out.
This movie is really something. A mostly forgotten masterpiece. It's interesting that it came out the same year as Psycho, ad it makes a great companion piece.
Dated, but still not without considerable merit. Tragically overshadowed by critical condemnation, practically destroying Powells career, this movie has a lot to offer. It's at least on par with the very comparable Psycho that, you guessed it, never had a press screening.
I can see why this got Powell blacklisted for the rest of his career, as it must've been shocking for audiences in 1960 to be confronted with this character, who seems to take such erotic pleasure from videotaping his victims as they die. The acting is generally good and the old footage of Mark's abusive upbringing at the hands of his "scientist" father is effective. But ultimately, I felt that the parts didn't fully gel, and the climax lacked the suspense of the classic 60s Hitchcock thrillers.
A great concept vividly brought to life with surprisingly colorful art direction and an intriguing lead performance. An offbeat thriller with a feel that is entirely unique.
I wonder if Mario Bava was influenced by this movie, as it often reminded me of Blood and Black Lace with its bright contrasting colors and "backstage" goings on. I have to say though, this movie didn't wow me. Perhaps I've seen too many similar movies made since (maybe inspired by this one?), but the psychological aspects didn't appeal to me as much as I hoped they would, and the main character always came off a little goofy. The main girl also annoyed me quite a bit.
