I like how a slightly piggish snout sets men into a frenzy of horror.

Don't think a pig nose is going to keep me from thinking Ricci is smoking hot.

An enchanting story and a charming message are diluted by poor pacing, resulting in an unbalanced script sprinkled with great ideas. It's frustrating to see what could have been very near perfection shine through the flawed final product. Regardless, Christina Ricci's performance is fantastic: she's both witty and vulnerable, making Penelope a very real and well-rounded heroine.

A silly, cliche story not helped by the performances or the writing. A fresh, interesting performance by Witherspoon and a hilarious one by O'Hara is all that keeps it from falling completely flat.

Loved it! She looks beautiful WITH the nose though, so all the people having so much trouble with it seems a bit weird... Nice plot (though predictable) and characters (though some a bit shallow)

Like the Harry Potter franchise, Penelope is based on a children's book. However, unlike Potter, the Big Screen version drains the tale of its magic. There are two major problems with this movie. First, Penelope's appearance isn't as grotesque as her suitors express it to be. Second, the opening scenes establishing her relationship with her "prince charming" aren't believable and fail miserably due to a weak screenplay. Plain and Simple; the tale should have been animated and told by PIXAR.

8/17/08 - I watched this on Demand from Comcast. It was really well done with a great cast and complex plot.

Christina Ricci plays up her cute side in this whimsical, fun and light film, one that can easily be enjoyed by anyone who is still held captive by their imagination.

I really enjoyed this, a strange but sweet modern day fairytale about acceptance. However, why do the companies in charge feel the need to dumb things down when they release the "American" version? Removing cursing I can understand but why would they remove segments of scenes that were character building?! Long story short, if you can I recommend seeing the original version of the film. While the difference overall is actually very minor I think it has more heart.

Unique twist on fairy tales & surprisingly clever! Adored costuming & settings: Penelope & her room always look a tad fairy-tale-ish, the rest of the world being more realistic. I have not read the book, so I can't compare, though as I watched the film it felt like an adaptation (Narration. Some plot points not given enough screen time) Not sure I agree with how "everything went down" but I think that's to do with editing & adaptaion. Really liked the end & the overall message of the film!

"Mark Palansky goes for Tim Burton-by-Jean-Pierre Jeunot whimsicality with Penelope, a storybook fable that never overplays its cutesiness but also fails to figure out what it wants to be." - Nick Schager

Gets a high score because of all the great cameos! I was cheering all the way every time I discovered a new cameo on screen. Also loved the film's whimsical nature, the Tim Burton-ish look & feel, and its charm. Though there were a few weak points (the older sister who was never mentioned nor seen again, for instance.)

This is a nice modern day fairy tale. Christina Ricci is good in the lead performance. I also enjoyed Peter Dinklage's supporting performance. I recommend this film if you like fairy tale stories.

Has its moments, but in the end its little more than a kiddle-pool chick flick, shallow and draped in swine-themed swaddling cloth. Though, by the time it was over, I was cravin' bacon.

This movie tries hard to be a fairytale classic. But there are many problems with the plot. Especially the family and the suitors acting as if she was completely hideous. Which was unconvincing and inappropriate considering her relatively mild disfigurement. Christina Ricci is bright and entertaining despite the bad material. James McAvoy was also good. Catherine O'Hara was way over the top as her mother. A cute movie if you can somehow overlook its obvious shortcomings.

Thinks it's a sweet, timeless fairytale -and is. Some wonderful casting and clever locations make this a (perhaps should be guilty) pleasure.

I thought this movie was very unique and fun!!! Although Penelope has a pig nose, she still finds love.

Slight physical imperfection causes everyone in town to be a complete idiot, removes half of Christina Ricci's acting ability, and results in a painfully blunt "moral" and everyone always shouting all the time in terrible accents.

It's a cute movie with an effortless seeming charm, helped by the actors. I couldn't help but be annoyed by the premise, though, especially since while Ricci isn't beautiful with the pig nose she's not hideous enough to warrant the teeth gnashing around which the movie is centered. The resolution is also not that satisfying, tho it could be worse. At least it has a lot of humour, especially around the margins, which makes up for the weak narrative.

It is over all kinda cute, and some of the aestheticism is nice as well, some of the characters are fun. It has a pacing issue at times however, it seemed as if it was about to end a few times before it just went on.

Top badass moment? A movie that totally shoots itself in the foot by casting a beautiful woman as Penelope; even with a pig’s nose she's still beautiful; the nose just makes her look kind of cute. (Hell, I'd marry her!) And that pretty well sums up the whole movie; there’re so many reasons why it ought to be rubbish, but it’s so well put together that it’s actually kind of… cute and fun. It's also an American film that so, so desperately wants to be British. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.
