Just an incredibly leisurely and easy film to watch. An effortless blend of contradictions, landing somewhere in a combination of narrative and documentary. On one hand an interesting slice-of-life time capsule, and on the other a poignant evocation of timeless mating rituals. The cinematography is beautiful, shifting from the hustle and bustle of a 1930s Berlin cityscape to the relaxing and airy countryside.

A delight. The casting of non-actors works marvellously and the simplicity of the story doesn't matter so much when we're treated to stunning shot upon stunning shot. The close-ups of the main characters' faces were especially beautiful.

Robert & Curt Siodmak, Billy Wilder, Fred Zinneman and Edgar G. Ulmer...how's that for a lineup of talent? This is a curious little film from the waning days of silent German cinema. I say curious because from beginning to end, I couldn't help but feel a sense of morbid curiosity at not only the people involved in the film, but of the beauty that was once Berlin. As I watched, I wondered how many of these people on the streets of a bustling Berlin, would lay dead on the cobblestones years later.

Half the story of four young people on a Sunday outing, half a "city symphony" film showing the vibrancy of 1930 Berlin, before everything started getting weird again. On both counts, it's absolutely lovely... the story is rather thin, but it doesn't need to be that deep. It's more of a semi-realist impressionism. The photography is gorgeous, lots of idyllic little scenes and stunning close-ups. It's a extremely pleasant film to behold, with some engaging slice of life portraits.

Sunday: A day for rest and fun away from everyday life. The film is simple but cute and enjoyable and briskly paced. It's ahead of it's time and nice to watch with the well done character sketches and a little bit of humour.

OK, yeah yeah yeah, it anticipates Neorealism and has an all-star cast behind the camera. It still isn't that engaging
