If you want to peer into Japanese cinema beyond the obvious canon of Kurosawa, Mizoguchi, and Ozu, you could do worse than this for a point of entry. Toyoda, along with Naruse, are a bit overlooked under the big three. But this has some vivid and colorful Toho-Scope production values, a script from one of the "Rashomon" author's stories, and Tatsuya Nakadai. No masterwork but a fine, fine movie.
