touching romantic comedy

Outstanding. Shields is amazing in this, and the film does a great job of showing us why she makes the choices she does instead of telling us. I found Bellocq, as he was presented, somewhat abstruse though. The production design is lovely, and I found myself feeling quite worried about Violet by the end. I wanted the film to keep going afterwards so that I could see what happened to her. I wonder about Bellocq too. So I guess that says something about both of those characterizations.

Too careful and tasteful, but effective. Carradine's physical inarticulateness is immensely effective, and Shields does well with the caprices of the preadolescent whore.

Child sexuality this blunt probably wouldn't fly in mainstream cinema fifteen years before or after this was made; it's a product of its times. All will appreciate Sarandon's lovely tits, but while most would not admit it, 12-year old Shields is scandalously fetching aside from her very good acting. An otherwise nice film, which thankfully ends up on a hesitant note instead of a moral bottom-line. It's daring, and yet leisurely and I do feel that it pulls some punches.

Interesting film. Impressive work by Louis Malle. There's also great performances by Susan Sarandon and especially Brooke Shields in one of the best child performances ever.

Why does this movie have a cult following? Are they all pedophiles?

Not a perfect film, but at the end of the day-- sensitive, provoking, honest.

The movie seems frozen in the same way that a still photo is frozen, and it "develops" hardly more than a still photo "develops." It never really gets moving, but is instead embalmed in a cozy, tasteful color scheme, dominated by browns, and in rich, fastidious sets and costumes. Which is perhaps just what you ought to expect from a script written by an experienced production designer

Louis Malle is probably the only director that could make me forget I'm watching a naked 13 year-old girl [credit also goes to Shields]. Take that as you will - I think it works.
