Hughes seems to farm his worst scripts out to other directors. The plot is older than D.W. Griffith, and not at all disguised by the 80s mufti in which it's dressed up. Technically slick, but it has no feeling for the lives and cares of real teenagers. And it's hard to feel too sorry for a financially underprivileged teenager who has her own car and answering machine!

While similar to the earlier "Breakfast Club" and "Sixteen Candles", this is simply one or two levels inferior. There is a lot less humor, and in its place, we instead have cliche juvenile melodrama. Also, unlike previous Hughes efforts, much of the supporting cast may as well be cardboard cut-outs. I don't mind the ending, though; teen dramas could use a bit of realism now and then. Overall, it's decidedly mediocre.
