the title and the fact that this is a cartoon might disguise a little bit. Princess is NO movie for children. itīs the poor & sad story of a young girl who grew up in the porno scene. her mother died and she has to live with her uncle. itīs a personal vendetta against the "guilty ones". morgenthaler painted a brutal, hopeless and dark scenario with some drastic moments. Hard shit and really sad.
Danish animated film about the brother and 5 year old daughter of Princess, a porn superstar who has been murdered (or possibly overdosed - it's not 100% clear). The pair embark on a determined quest to destroy all the films and magazines featuring images of Princess, which leads to bloody clashes with seedy pornographers. This is pretty dark stuff that touches on issues of exploitation and child abuse. Violent and tragic.
One of the most stylish films ever. While the present-day action is a gritty-looking animation, August's memories are live action footage, the two blending together perfectly. The surrealist scenes with the stuffed bunny rabbit "Multi", the dreams of the beach, and August's haunted suffering is tantalizingly beautiful. The montage of people August guns down in the diner is one of the coolest scenes I have ever seen. Brutal violence, with just the right touch of humor. An all-time great picture.
I'm not exaggerating when I say that this is one of the best animated films I've ever seen. Sometimes funny and often moving, this thrilling vengeance tale pulls no punches and offers an intense and satisfying story. Not for the faint of heart, it's extremely bleak and depressing. I really liked it.
