Summary: Cis and Duo, a pair of freed minds, practice their skills in an old-fashioned samurai sword-fight. Duo tells Cis that he's tired of living outside the Matrix and he wants her to come with him... and he's not accepting no for an answer. (imdb)
Generic samurai anime fused with Cypher's subplot from the first Matrix movie. Some decent bladed weapon fighting, but overall it's not that memorable and blazes no thematic ground not covered in the original film.
The Animatrix was quite crappy overall, and this short is a good example why. Yoshiaki Kawajiri is one of the greatest geniuses to work in animation, with Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust, Ninja Scroll, Highlander: Vengeance, part of Memories, and A Wind Named Amnesia to his credit...but Program just sucks. The fight is lousy, with predictable, tired choreography, and the words exchanged between hero and villain as trite and yawn-inducing as they come. A real waste of time.
Well the animation was good but I found the fight to be too over the top to be really enjoyable. I know that sounds strange considering it's about The Matrix but I think that's one of the things I didn't like about The Matrix sequels, it was just too over the top in its action sequences for its own good.
