When things gets heavier and dirtier -- and more uneven --, it's easy to lose interest, but I can say I stayed hooked for at least about 40 minutes. Overall, it's a found footage version of Superbad, but much dumber: the bros are slightly believable, the girls are certainly hot but totally morons, and the party is, well, goddam insane. When I was 17, I was just like the pre-party Thomas. And I guess I'm still the same loser.

Thomas (Thomas Mann) is turning seventeen, and his friends Costa (Oliver Cooper) and J.B. (Jonathan Daniel Brown) are planning to throw a huge birthday bash at Thomas' house, and to increase their popularity among their schoolmates. As Thomas' parents are going away for the weekend for their anniversary, Thomas' father lays down the rules, which include having a max of five people at their house, not to drive his expensive Mercedes, and no one is allowed in his office. Thomas is first reluctant

Good for a few laughs is really the only thing this is getting from me. It glorifies misogyny and generally being an inconsiderate ass but it is does in this weird, charming way. Even though that sounds stupid, it still popped me for a few laughs as the party itself simply escalated out of control. I will never give Project X a second thought outside of having seen it once but it was good to kill off an afternoon. Poor man's Superbad, college version of Hangover, but only good for one watch.

Rating this movie on any scale is all but pointless...it is what it is and you'll either like it or hate it. For what it says about filmmaking today and the generation its catered to, I shudder to think what possibilities await us in the future and what lessons our storytellers will tell. Project X is ultimately the darkest, shallowest and most depressing examination of the human condition ever.

The found footage approach works well and the film pretty much nails (part of) American youth culture. It's simple and energetic, only sporadically amusing, but overall a very good time.

One of the dudebroest movies ever. Narratively it's basically a poor man's Superbad, with the male characters chiseled down to base archetypes and the females to virtual nonexistence unless it's time for them to take their tops off. Light, scattered laughs here and there. The wilder the party gets the less funny the movie gets as it resorts to generic wackiness (a midget, lol!). I do give the editors credit for maintaining a hyper-energetic music video vibe for an hour straight, though.

"Awesomeness seems to be the chief quality prized by both the film and its characters; all other considerations-like safety, property damage, and especially good taste-are secondary." - Andrew Schenker

Project X is a film all about the spectacle of throwing what could possibly be one of the largest house parties ever. When it focuses on that, it's actually fairly interesting and there are moments where you're either shocked or laughing throughout. When it tries to focus on the characters, it falls flat and has difficulty regaining momentum. It doesn't have a satisfying payoff or much of a message, nor does it have a plot to pay attention to or characters to either grasp onto or like.

There's a lot to try to forget about a movie like this—images I'd like to scrub from my mind. But there's one picture I don't think I should: It's Thomas on the rooftop, screaming at the sky—looking for all the world like a lost little boy who knows this isn't a happy ending … and has simply stopped caring. Misogynistic bullshit based in some alternate universe where there are little to no negative repercussions for being selfish and inconsiderate towards anyone besides yourself for the sake of being King Douche of Pasadena High School for Assholes.
