wow - so refreshingly god-awful. Has perhaps the coolest final frame in the history of cinema as we know it - but I'm not gonna spoil it for ya - you're gonna have to rent it, or, in this case, root around for it in some thrift store bin. It will be worth the effort, for, it has the grandest moment of a final (SURPRISE!) frame in the entire annals of the moving image. John Simon often wound up in fisticuffs over supporting this one.

This movie confused me and scared me as a kid. Watching it now, it was funny, especially the fight with the bear in the water.

This movie is so silly. Attempting to fuse political concerns with a completely ridicoulus horror/monster story results in raccoons in the fireplace, exploding sleeping bags, and the most outrageous theory of evolution ever. I never cease to be entertained by this 'so-bad-its-good' flick as it does a complete 180 on its plot as soon as shrooms, paper-works and boar-molested bear monsters take centerstage. A movie that will keep you awake at night not from horror, but from laughter.

This isn't a good movie, but I didn't hate it. I don't know what the hell Frankenheimer was thinking with this, but I'm glad this isn't his first film I've seen otherwise it would have been probably the last. Most of the points are for the monster and for a some ridiculous deaths.

Sermonizing sci-fi allows Frankenheimer to show his knitted-brow concern for liberal causes (housing problems in the urban ghettos, Indian rights, industrial pollution), while he amuses himself with the lunacies of this Field and Stream nightmare (a frenzied raccoon, an overinflated tadpole, and a murderous fifteen-foot-tall mutant barbecued bear). The liberal stuff seems to be for the sole purpose of helping Frankenheimer get to sleep at night and face himself in the mirror the next morning.
