Teenage rebellion at it's best! Awesome soundtrack. Christian Slater used to have such cool roles... what happened?

I enjoyed this movie as a teenager and I still like it today. Christian Slater is good in the lead role. This is an underrated film that you don't hear talked about very often

Very cool teenager movie. The lead role plays to Christian Slater's strengths and he really runs with it. Also, I have a new reason why I wish I was a teen in the 80's: pirate radio stations. Can't believe those were a thing.

This film is HIGH FIDELITY / 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU, a dark and brooding drama about the struggle of youth in the public school system as seen through the eyes of a DJ on public radio.

Pump Up the Volume, an exceedingly well-written teenager-full-of-angst melodrama about a high school student who operates a pirate radio broadcast that criticizes parents and teachers while revealing the turmoil of adolescence.

Slater is almost unbearable in this, but it has a decent soundtrack and some laughs.

Slater elevates an otherwise by-the-numbers 80's high school flick.

This typifies a movie franchise which profiteers from that monolithic mass of American teenagers rallied around the flag of non-conformism.

I still watch it almost every year, even 17 years later.

Probably better than most teen angst films, with a pretty good soundtrack to boot.

Slater is terrific. Though uneven, this does have some pertinent things to say that you don't always find in a youth-appeal film.

Exactly as good and heavy-handed as a movie in 1990 about a pirate radio high schooler can be. Plus, Samantha Fox's boobs!

This film is overblown and clumsy in many respects, from the two-dimensional overly simplified authority figures to the badly delivered message about the all-corrupting media consuming and distorting everything. It does have a lot going for it though; Slater has moments of brilliance and his smoldering sexiness of later years is starting to become very evident indeed. Despite its faults I can help but like it, a lot.

Pretty unexceptional teen rebellion dramedy...Slater is in full on mini-Nicholson mode and everything is 100% predictable from the first moment, but it has a few laughs and the first mainstream film reference to a cock ring that I can think of.
