A ridiculous movie that tries its hardest to be an 80s action flick but tries a little too hard. The acting is passably cheesy and it keeps a quick enough pace to prevent boredom. It's nothing close to a good movie, but it's entertaining.
Considering the premise, and what it%u2019s adapting, this should have ditched any attempt at seriousness and just become a gory exploitation film if it couldn%u2019t get a properly dark and thoughtful story from the material. While it has the potential to be ridiculous, neon-lit and enjoyable trash, it just ends up as another convoluted action film which forces into a subplot a cliché of the innocent woman and her little child in a feeble attempt for emotion.
I was worried about how this would follow up the awesome Thomas Jane punisher, but it doesn't follow at all. It instead creates a new timeline, essentially reworking Punisher's past. The action is awesome, and there is a lot of it. If the 2004 Punisher is a reboot, is this a re-reboot? I dunno, but whatever it is, it works for me.
I like that this movie was just a non stop viiolent bloodbath...that it took no prisoners and went balls out...the acting and story who cares they will blow..its the action..and this movie has it..
Ultra violence is all War Zone has going for it. Couple of cool parts in the mixture of countless poor action scenes. Punisher himself is such an unlikable twat, lets kill people for petty crime! That is supposedly the point yet never was it satisfying which only makes the C grade plot and petty acting all the more noticeable.
One of the most underrated films of recent memory. So audaciously stupid and gory, but most of all funny and intentional (but not tongue-in-cheek, these people obviously wanted to make this movie, not make fun of it). It's all about the violence, and it's all really slapsticky and well-done, and aesthetically faithful to the comic. More akin to the goofier Japanese action-gore flicks than say Saw or Hostel, but I'd take Looney Tunes over Leatherface most days anyway.
Punisher: War Zone is a really fun movie. It's not much more than that; there's nothing intellectually stimulating or a deeper message than "crime is bad", but it's really enjoyable to watch. Since it doesn't take itself too seriously, the audience can have a good time while watching it. It's not a perfect movie, and if you aren't a fan of the action and special effects in B-movies, but if you can tolerate somewhat cheesy and campy action films, then you'll probably have a good time.
"Lionsgate's Punisher: War Zone shares with the studio's flagship Saw franchise not only a dimly lit, puke-green and fetid-yellow aesthetic but also, absurdly enough, a villain who goes by the name Jigsaw." - Nick Schager
It's bloody and violent as hell, but everything is actually so goddam brutalized -- the acting is superbly bad -- that you just don't care about anything here. Still, I guess there is some sort of irony -- these guys must have laughed a lot making/seeing those absurd murders. Must have -- I really want to believe that, because I had some fun with that amount of blood on my face.
After listening to the podcast with Patton Oswalt and the director, I had to give this one a shot. It's a lean film story-wise, referencing an origin story without being bogged down by it. But who cares about that, the best parts are the Punisher taking on a colorful array of badguys. My favorite is Looney Bin Jim, played by Doug Hutchison, who was also great as the pyromaniac in Give 'Em Hell Malone.
Well, that was entertaining as hell. Dominic West really went apeshit overboard, Stevenson looks like Chris Benoit, Newman was perfect as Microchip, there's lots of blood and guns, and this was all kinds of fun. I loved the crap out of this.
I'm not sure any other comic book movie has captured the spirit of it's source material more than this one. There are many parts of it that aren't great (camp factor, ridiculously over the top villain), but it is at no times unwatchable (unless you can't stand gore). Definitely worth a shot if you are a fan of the comic series.
War Zone outdoes its predecessor in two ways - by sticking more truly to the source material, and by being unmitigatedly violent. After mistakenly killing an undercover Fed, Frank Castle must contend with his own guilt and the vendetta of a mafia goon he disfigured - Jigsaw. While the acting and overall story may feel a little campy at times, it's a great butt-kicking ride for bloody action enthusiasts.
You know what? This movie is just great. It's completely insane, it definitely doesn't paint Frank as a "heroic antihero" as much as "less evil psychopath, compared to the more-evil psychopaths he's killing." This movie is everything "The Expendables" tried - and failed - to be. The action is so over-the-top it approached Piranha 3-D levels, and the movie is better for it.
I've always considered The Punisher to be a whining pussy of a character, but this adaptation wisely relegates Castle's back story to a very brief flashback and focuses on the gory comic book murder. Seriously, there's more blood and brains in this movie than a lot of horror flicks. Dominic West's accent is pathetic but I think he was doing it on purpose as his cartoonish villain is completely ludicrous (in a good way). Ray Stevenson's Punisher outfit looked pretty cool too.
Brutal. One word description. The fighting is brutal, but the script is just as brutal. However, the filmmakers seemed to achieve exactly what they set out to do, instead of making some watered-down would-be superhero movie like the Thomas Jane version. (Travolta should have as little to do with action movies as possible in my opinion.) If this movie has a sequel, I'll be there on opening night. This was over-the-top hardcore action, it was gory, but it was really good.
"Punisher: War Zone" is a brutal assault on all counts. Granted, it is a movie called "Punisher," but at least the outing in 2004, while about as dark and violent, didn't revel in campy blood-squirting idiocy. Thomas Jane played a soul-scarred man; Ray Stevenson plays a 2-dimensional prop, surrounded by a lousy plot and terrible actors across the board. Sure, the action hits you like a maul, but it's about as shallow a film as you'll ever see, completely soulless from opening to closing credits.
THE GOOD: Perfect spirit of the comic book, this is the real Frank Castle (dialogue, actions, look); Like the costume, perfect transition to film; Surprises during scenes, the unexpected; THE BAD: Primary villain was over-the-top, could have been better; Last scene was disrespectful to Christians, completely unnecessary and will keep me from owning it; Special effects looked fake, especially CGI blood; Overly campy at times
