Jerry Schatzberg was the third Jew to make a film about a fictional model in the space of 5 years, after John Schlesinger ("Darling", also a character study) and William Klein (whose "Polly Maggoo" was also a first foray into cinema after having worked as a fashion photographer). "Puzzle" shows talent but is the least impressive of the three films. The story is stale and uninspired, and Dunaway is utterly charmless and a chore to watch. Schatzberg's subsequent films were better.
