Great example of classic Hollywood, with Garbo dominating the screen whether in alone a loving close up or center stage amongst a crowd of people. The story's rather good too, very briskly paced, but it's definitely Garbo's show.

Pretty well done romantic drama. The controversial sexuality of the queen was evident here, though they ended up it with more "expected" love affair.

Pre-Hays-Code fun. See Greta wear trousers, walk like a gunslinger, and kiss another woman full in the mouth. Plus it really is a very heart-stealing and engaging story. And Greta Garbo was so beautiful that calling her a "babe" would be a demotion

Functions as more than a mere star vehicle thanks to the efforts of master director Mamoulian. As I've yet to see every Garbo movie, I can't say if this is the best one, but I wouldn't be surprised. Combines humor, romance, force and the frank bisexuality of it's title character to form a strange concoction with elements of sobering historic drama, weepie and camp. Damn fine filmmaking.

came into this one expecting garbo to be the same one from the silent film era, but she changed in a most beautiful way, and managed to make this film very good.
