I do not believe in god, nor in morality, neither in law; But there is one thing I truly believe in, and this one thing is Beauty. Querelle of Brest, is easily the most beautiful thing I have ever experienced, and this movie take this holy-like experience and demolish it. Fassbinder has probably done it on purpose, but there is the slim chance he just hadn't had a clue about what he was doing. I hate him.

Bizarrely has the reputation as 'lesser Fassbinder' (too stylized? too sexual? too queer? who cares) but for me its his most ALIVE. One of my favourite film experiences ever, erotic, melancholy, hilarious. The queers in this film are armed with switchblades, tough, violent, funny and refuse to be labeled, this is a delirious glimpse of what gay film could have been like before it went all bland, inoffensive, domestic and overly corporate.

A mystifying blend of melodrama, pornography and mind-fuckery.

It's rare that a director goes out on a film so perfectly representing their life, passion, sensibilities. Long live Fassbinder.

Amazingly weird, and yet seemingly aware of its own stilted staginess, with some of the most absurdly frank dialogue I've ever heard, especially from something made in the '80s. If you want to hear a guy talk about the shit that was on his cock after he fucked the main character in the ass (his words!) this movie is definitely for you. Though it may be bizarre and uncomfortable at times, and not always in a good way, it's never anything less than an interesting piece of art.

I just can't take Genet seriously. Leather melodrama/kinky Harlequin romance--plus a lot of god-awful pseudo-philosophical observations. Fassbinder responds with cartoonish sets and cartoonish acting performances, and Tom of Finland costumes. Jeanne Moreau singing somehow brought to mind early John Waters (if only it had been Divine!), and inadvertently amusing moments increase from there. I just don't get it. There are literally none of the elements I find so moving from his previous work.

For me, Fassbinder's last film struck me as being a stage play rather than a film

Fassbinder's swan song seems overly complicated and hampered by English and French-speaking actors.
