Like the lives of the utterly mediocre middle-class are so interesting to peer into. This film has nothing going for it, except looking at Anne Hathaway for an hour or so if you find her hot.
God/Love/Music (the holy trinity) conquers all at the world's most Bohemian wedding. There's some really touching stuff here; I love the house as a character, the implicit history and familiarity they all have with it, and the family dynamics and melding are really well played. The major weakness is probably the direct exposition itself, and the connective tissue to get from point to point (aka: salon scene). Wish I'd thought to employ Cyro Baptista and a samba line at my own wedding, durnit.
"Jumping from the dreariness of the familial drama to the good cheer of the concluding ceremony proves more than a little jarring, but the tensions inherent in the film's split personality work in its favor." - Andrew Schenker
I didnt expect much from the movie, was pleasantly surprised by the story and the acting. The direction of Demme makes this movie real and relatable. I was really surprised by the acting skills of Anne Hathaway and Rosemarie Dewitt, both were noteworthy. One of the better movies of 2008 for sure as some have put it.
Anne Hathway is really great is this film. My only complaint is really subjective: If I had to attend a wedding like the one portrayed in the film, I would try to steal all the attention for myself, too.
Very realistic, but unfortunately reality can be a drag. Can't really knock this film, but I have difficulty finding something to praise as well, except for Robyn Hithcock's small appearance.
"With all do respect sir, you dont know shit about loading a dishwasher." Anne Hathaway was stunning, but simply put this just wasnt really my cup of tea. Its not the movie I would see again, but I see what people found so great about it (though I also get the complaints about it being drawn out). It is also probably one of the saddest movies I ever saw, so sad I had to do something else to distract myself while watching.
Good acting doesn't help justify the boring plot, pointless and overlong scenes and a script whose existence is in question. But the main problem is that even in its pointlessness, it seems contrived.
Anne Hathaway is completely annoying and horrible here, and that's exactly the point. There are plenty of likeable characters here otherwise, and there are a number of touching moments in the film. The wedding itself felt very drawn out, and it wouldn't have been a shame to see 10-15 minutes shaved off of the movie as a whole.
Interesting plot with interesting characters, though the positive is the negative as well seeing as how the plot dead-ends this movies plan to be worth more than just 2 hours of cinema.
