Summary: A chameleon that aspires to be a swashbuckling hero finds himself in a Western town plagued by bandits and is forced to literally play the role in order to protect it.
This movie is so much fun to watch. There is definitely a lot more to this movie then just being for kids. There are lot of funny references and Johnny Depp gives a funny vocal performance. I highly recommend this fun animated film!
There are some stunning images, particularly when the film goes down slightly surreal paths. And the story is easy enough to tag along with. But most of the humor is either "Hey, recognize this reference?" or the usual anthropomorphism. Look, it's animals doing things you've seen people do. I just didn't think it was funny, nor did the film have much heart to it. When it's not being predictable, it's being obnoxious. It RESEMBLES fun but it doesn't FEEL fun. It's actually sort of dull.
The ILM animation is gorgeous, I especially appreciated how detailed everything looked. The voice actors were all excellent, really making their characters memorable. The story is really basic and I didn't laugh as much as I thought I would, but pretty much everything else was great.
It's a shame that "Rango" looked as slick as it did as some might be duped into sitting through this - much like myself. From the opening scene, I found myself unable to find a reason to buy into the story. The nods to various westerns get so tedious that by the time the biggest nod of all occurs, as Rango talks directly to a certain nameless man, you're burnt out by it. Still, the animation is pretty stunning and the dry look of it makes you thirsty. It's just a shame I didn't care for it.
without a doubt , it is my favorite animation of 2011 although I haven't seen the others yet but I know this movie is the best . an excellent story was written and the movie itself had a lot of beautiful scenes that refers to western movies and another classic movies . Only I have to say that if you have seen a lot of movies , you would enjoy this animation .
This film retains retains the narrative and style of a Western within its absurd frame. I was impressed by the imagination and physicality of the animation and design, and appreciated the relative subtlety with which modern elements and themes were incorporated into the plot.
Rango is a strange film, balancing all too familiar beats and an irritating protagonist with stunning visuals, striking character design, and incredible textures: sheen scales and frilled feathers. It's an average film, but I have never seen an animated film that has attempted this visual style and pulled it off so well. Score is not a grade.
Nice, trippy little tale. Good for kids & adults. The plot isn't the most original, very reminiscent of The Three Amigos, but the rest of it is very imaginative. I found it quite charming.
The animation was really good, and there was nice voice-work (particularly from Johnny Depp). I also enjoyed the western style and it was occasionally funny. Otherwise, I didn’t really connect with it. It certainly lacked the heart that animated films by Pixar possess. I wasn’t always sure if it was intended for adults or children either - it walked a thin line. I did really enjoy the references to The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), I’ve gotta say.
i like how downright weird this is for a kids movie, and i LOVE how ugly all the characters are. the rare kid's movie that doesn't feel really 'marketed' at all.
A lot of fun and one of the best animated films of the past few years. Relies a little too much on references but I'll be damned if they aren't enjoyable.
i had been told time and again that this movie lies in a zone that is simply to adult oriented for children, yet i think that those sentiments are mostly unjustified. i found it to be a downright enjoyable movie, that is overwhelmingly intricately detailed in animation. give it a watch, the adults of the audience will be the ones who most appreciate this.
Rango is a phenomenal piece of animation with some of the most gorgeous character animation and framing of the 3D animation era. Despite its many strengths, the story is a muddled mess of generic Western cliches tied together with lacking focus and even less coherency. While the first act screams brilliance, the string of Deus Ex Machinas (including an appearance from Timothy Olyphant as Clint Eastwood in the world's most insulting casting ever) leave a bitter taste by the film's finale.
"Haunted by the ghosts of Leone, Peckinpah, and Dali, Gore Verbinski's wild animated romp Rango turns an assembly line of classic western themes and iconography into a bustlingly fresh genre ecosystem." - Glenn Heath Jr.
