Summary: Four short films, based on stories by Japanese mystery writer Rampo Edogawa, explore dark themes of obsession, sex and death. In "Mars Canal," a naked man wanders alone through a swamp recalling a former lover. "Mirror Hell" follows a serial killer with a fixation on hand mirrors. An extremely bizarre and interesting work. I've never heard of any of these directors (two of which also had a hand in writing) but all four stories have at least some measure of talent to them, and the last two are really quite good. Be prepared for some fetishistic imagery/themes & a low budget feel that sometimes shows. Interesting to note that this is the first thing Kaneko, a manga artist, has ever done in film and it's the most impressive of the anthology.

Thought-provoking, though I cannot say how or about what. Well-directed, well-acted, well-executed.

Came for Jissoji's Mirror Hell (which was excellent), walked away with appreciation for Kaneko's incredibly disturbing Crawling Bugs. The other two, I could take or leave -- though some of Mars Canal reminded me a bit of Philippe Grandrieux, at least on the surface.
