Rasputin: The Mad Monk (1966)

Summary: The movie chronicles the events of history's "man of mystery," Rasputin. Although not quite historically accurate and little emphasis is put on the politics of the day, Rasputin's rise to power and eventual assassination are depicted in an attempt to explain his extraordinary power and influence. Lee is entertaining as always; his Rasputin is intense and very strange. The film lacks a good foil for him, though, and in fact no one else has very much personality at all. The arc the story will take is plain to see from early on, especially if you know "the true story." By the climax, I was eager to see Rasputin get poisoned, shot, drowned, stabbed, and hung, but I suppose the filmmakers thought that would be over the top. Disappointing.

The first Hammer Horror film I really did not enjoy. It didn't interest me from the start and even with a rather entertaining ending the rest of the film was incredibly dull and Rasputin was a very unlikeable character I really didn't enjoy watching. Acting was decent, and Christopher Lee was totally unrecognisable at first, but its the storyline and characters that really let this film down, and I have a feeling it will probably be my least favourite from the Hammer Horror films I'm watching.

Serviceable bio of Russia's sex machine, but for some reason they skipped over all the best parts of Rasputin's historic death!
