The "Rock 'Em-Sock 'Em Robots" movie was a little more entertaining than I thought it'd be. The story of the alienating and absent father trying to win back his son's love and trust is a bit crusty these days, but Hugh Jackman (one of my few man crushes) has enough charisma to keep it interesting. I also liked the ending - not only did it buck my expectations but also made me at least a little interested in seeing where a sequel would go. Worth a watch, especially with a beer or two.

The special effects are pretty good, I certainly believed those were actual robots. Of course, I was also tempted to believe half the humans in the film were robots. It's sappy and predictable, the kid is annoying and Jackman's character really doesn't make sense to me, Even so it delivers what it promises, silly robot fights and a predictable but decently executed story. It's kind of fun despite the many flaws

A very genuine concept that never got off the ground because it was unsure of what exactly it was. It was a watered down, child like version of Rocky that tried to come at you with explosive and engaging characters, but fundamentally it failed to do so at all. Jackmans Charlie was all over the place as far as characterization, and who actually went the full 127 minutes without getting annoyed at least once with the kids trash talking attitude?

Pretty standard sports movie plot, with a pretty standard dad and son plot. Still, it's good fun, the robot with no personality still has some personality, and unlike Transformers you can actually see the robots fighting rather than metal in a blender. Jackman is kind of Wolverine light, but I'm alright with that. Decent watch, worth a look.

The fights themselves are quite impressive and are fun to watch, everything beyond that not so much! From the second Jackman's annoying irritant of a son shows up every second of this shitfest can be predicted. This is made worse by the fact that for some reason Levy drags this rubbish out for two painful hours. The whole thing lacks purpose, continuity and feeling, which isn't helped by the awful character relationships, script and general underdevelopment of the "robot boxing" premise.

Not half bad! Would have thought this movie would be a lot worse.. A boxer teaching a robot to fight... now c'mon.. Bad character development. Cool action. Cool special effects and eventhough it had just a little too much commercial value, not a bad movie :).

From the teasers you would have thought the central focus would have been the robots with Hugh Jackman. This is in fact a children's film which features a rather annoying little white kid doing hip hop dance routines with his robot friend for horribly long stretches of its running time. If this wasn't quite annoying enough the whole story is like any other feel good father/son and sports movie cliche rolled into one. The robots look pretty campy but at least it fits in with the lame story.

Every boxing movie cliché in the book put together to make a movie well suited for kids whose childhood was spent on pokémon and daytime anime and their early teens in front of their Xbox 360. So if you watched Akira and played Mike Tysons Punch Out during your childhood, I guess you better stay clear of this. If your kids nag you to take them to see this: Bring along a smartphone of some sorts and watch 'Over the Top' on it. I don't know how to get you through the last 34 minutes, though. Sorry

Soulless and grotesquely inept storytelling destroys what could have been a decent enough kid's movie. A kid's movie filled with hard violence, break dancing robots, skanky women and the biggest douche-bag father figure protagonist since Schwarzenegger in Jingle All The Way.

This is as generic of a movie as you will find these days. If you're looking for your generic feel-good old-guy-finds-redemption and young-boy-comes-of-age movie, it does decently at that. I think it might have had potential if it worked at filling in more of the lore and mythology around fighting robots. Instead it just goes straight for cliche and some god-awful hip hop dancing scenes. The child actor is particularly forced and terrible.

Congratulations to Shawn Levy for finally making the worst adaption of a Richard Matheson story ever(a title previously held by the assclown responsible for "What Dreams May Come") and the second worst robot film(no one can touch Michael Bay on that level). By the end of the second bout I was willing to invest $50,000 to any bot willing to take out the writers. In the end it's just "Paper Moon" with robots but begs the question "Do we make Hollywood stupid or does Hollywood make us stupid". Hmm.

And here I thought that I came so well prepared. I already knew it was 'Rocky' with Robots and a bit of 'Over the Top' crammed in there. I knew it would stray from robot mayhem into amateur writing hour, and Jackman, Lilly and some piss annoying kid would stutter through the toebreakingly bad dramatic scenes. But I didn't see the breakdancing robot coming. I DIDN'T SEE IT COMING!! OH MY FUCKING GOD, HOW CAN I NOT HAVE SEEN THAT COMING?!?!

It toes the line of schmaltz pretty consistently, but it only verges into that territory on a few occasions. Overall it's a surprisingly uplifting story, helped by some remarkable CGI. Certainly my biggest positive surprise of the year.

I think this was a good idea for a film and it was delivered well, a few flaws here and there stopped me from really enjoying it but I think it had enough there for me to like it. Hugh Jackman was a good lead, not an extremely likable character but he portrayed him well. Dakota Goyo also did a great job as young Max, but again not an overly likable character. Overall an entertaining film with enough Action & a good concept to keep the audience interested. Worth a look :)

When I first heard of this movie my first thought - I do not need a Rocky meets Transformers flick - How wrong was I - I really enjoyed this movie from start till finish. All in all, we just observe that many of the old tricks & formulas of Hollywood still works and are you not old enough to see them, then they work really well. The kid wasn't that annoying, as many reviewers have spotted out!

So Shawn Levy and John Gatins tries to recreate Rocky with robots. And that is all. I mean, the concept of robot fighting having replaced human boxing is, honestly, not that far-fetched in today's health-dominated society. It is rather average, though. There is nothing really thought provoking or overly interesting going on. One thing it did have, though, was some nice CGI; the robots (and their fights) were stunning. Otherwise, I wasn't really moved or emerged in the film, it was simply there.
