I thought the ending was going to be a little better. But still a pretty good movie.

John Wayne is brilliant in what is an embellished western. Entertaining and never tiresome.

Shame on those who say John Wayne can't act. This is among his best performances, a tyrannical rancher too stubborn to acknowledge his vulnerabilities. He is a master of the reaction shot, able to communicate so much with just a glance, and in this film particularly he has this sympathetic quality beneath his eyes. There are plenty of great things about this picture - my only real complaints are the female roles and a weak resolution - but I had to spend this entire space on how great Wayne is.

The ending was not complete. It was a disappointment since it was such a good western up till then.

Pretty boring plot. It only gets so many points for good camera work and a great John Wayne, but I must admit that I expected more from it.

Excellent western from Hawks, and though the director is often compared to John Ford, this film shows that Hawks' approach is quite different in sensibility from Ford. Where Ford relies on compositions and visuals, Hawks highlights people and relationships. Where Ford brings out the iconic hero, Hawks reveals how the many can become one. The dialogue here is snappy, and Hawks uses his stars in ways that highlight the strengths they bring before the camera.

Grandiose, in no small way thanks to the sweeping score. Clift is righteous and fair, Wayne is troubled - just the way we like them.
