John Dahl's 1992 film provides further evidence that Nicolas Cage (at least at one time) is a true talent. I love suspense-thrillers about simpletons looking to get by who become engulfed in an escalating entangled web of corrupted morals, violence, and impending doom. Much like classic noirs, and the more recent "A Simple Plan," Red Rock West is a very entertaining and suspenseful thriller featuring a great cast and top-notch direction that only gets better as it moves along.

Nicolas Cage is great as a put-upon drifter who stumbles into a scheme that quickly puts his strong moral code to the test in this neo-noir set in the kind of town where a bottle of whiskey is never out of arm's reach, the locals have no life other than the one that serves the main characters and your enjoyment of the events that happen within depend largely on your ability to suspend disbelief.

Not a great noir by any stretch, but it's still a pretty entertaining effort. Hopper is totally great.

Underrated thriller/noir that fans of Hollywood films would enjoy--great cast and a solid story. See also John Dahl's *The Last Seduction*.

A well-made thriller. Dahl is a fine director, and Cage and Hopper give good performances.

Good little spaghetti... uhh, neo-noir? Cage and Boyle are crap but Dennis Hopper shines in an atypical role for him.

A bizarre but highly entertaining fusion of western and neo-noir, that delights in its absurdity. You don't cast Nicolas Cage in the lead with Dennis Hopper as a twangy ex-Marine/hitman without a certain self-awareness. Like Dahl's better-known Last Seduction, the wink-and-a-nod take on genre tropes most obviously manifests itself in the plot, which twists and turns on itself repeatedly until it's tangled up in knots. Above all it's just plain fun.

This is a neo-noir masterpiece. Just absolutely brilliant from beginning to end. It is a crime how under-seen this film is. The plot is crazy, and complicated with twists at every turn, yet it is breeze to follow. This film, aside from Goodfellas, may just have the most well-written and delivered dialogue of the 90's. This is an ABSOLUTE must-see.

The mid-west seems to have become the ideal setting for the modern noir. This is a prime example. The wide open spaces, suspicious characters and American iconography provide the director with unlimited fodder to unleash his creative playbook upon. Cage plays the beleaguered anti-hero to perfection, while the story is fast-paced and snappy. Towards the end the characters become clichés and I began to lose interest in the outcome, but there is still plenty to love in this stylish thriller.

It aims for a spaghetti-western noir vibe, but misses completely. Annoying acting finishes the blow.

Cage, Hopper and Boyle are fantastic in this small town crime thriller about a regular Joe who gets mistaken for a hit man. Sharp little indy film.

Genuine film noir is rare today, even though it is a genre to which people, especially film people, remain attracted. The consequence of this is that whenever what looks like a piece of film noir is released, it tends to be overestimated. This film is a case in point.
