An odd film in the way it tries to explain the satanic panic that perhaps should've been a true crime film based around Remembering Satan, instead we get waffly weirdness where motives are very thin and the threat is only to a single victim of the panic. Not as terrible as it could've been due to good direction but the script is lacklustre

It would be good movie, but where is the first structure of script? We couldn't even meet characters in the beginning of movie; thus, it didn't work well, yet not bad.

All this movie needs is a bit more courage to end it with the realization that it was all an organized crime, instead of putting it solely on one person. 'Cause "the church wants you to fear satan, so that you turn to god" would be a way more interesting movie sentence.

Utterly inert. Unconvincing and uninteresting, despite a smattering of respectable performances. I don't think this story/subject matter ever would've worked cinematically, though, no matter how the filmmakers approached it.

I wish I could regress to the time period before I watched this movie, and then never watch this movie

I know that we have the benefit of hindsight in all its glorious 20/20, but still, this movie is almost unbearable to watch because of how stupid the main character is. What kind of asshat just believe a story about (an ever-expanding number of) satanic cultists who eat babies, without the slightest shred of evidence? It was the 1990s not the 1890s. One to avoid.

Well, maybe if I hadn't guessed that "plot twist" right from the start the movie would've been a bit better for me, but what can I do? It's not bad, but it's not very good either. I'd hoped this movie would explore some new ways in its genre but I was disappointed.

Alright, but the big reveal was rather weak, and they certainly didn't do themselves any favors doing it the way they did with no impact inserted. The creepy dreams worked best for me. At least there there was some horror.

Not bad. Not special either. Still wondering what genre it is though. My review here : http://opinion-as-a-moviefreak.blogspot.be/2016/05/regression-2015.html

I felt I was kind of robbed of the enticing satanistic cult -film I was promised in the beginning. Disappointing and cheap. Still Regression has some value as an examination of the suggestive forms this kind of collective panic can take; Still in the 21st Century.

Good cast, good director, but as far as I know straight to streaming. The verdict: good, maybe very good, mystery. I think those looking for a solid mystery would be pleased. I was concerned that the film would be too disturbing (either because of incest or horror elements), but it really wasn't in my opinion. Liked the way flaws of religion and science are exposed and seem similar; and the status given to good thinking for one's self.

Extremely ill-advised movie. Did none of the actors or financial backers read the script before coming on board?

Pretty gloomy and dismal subject matter and movie. Decent performances, but something is really missing here. I can't really recommend spending time on this.

Some nice cinematography here and there, but the story is well known and there isn't a new twist to it.

Great set-off which skewered to a conclusion I didn’t care about. Also I was under the impression that this was categorized as horror - which plainly doesn’t suit this crime thriller aside from some nightmare trailer bait bits.

Despite tremendous efforts from Ethan Hawke (bordering on over acting) & Emma Watson to sell this shabbily written story it fails to satisfy. The twist ending was obvious from the beginning. Once you suspect the reveal, it's no fun watching it play out. The mumbo-jumbo science was suspicious from the start & only become more ridiculous as it progressed. At least the ending was grounded in reality & they did not foist more supernatural garbage as us, like they did with the stupid dream sequences.

The Satanic Ritual Abuse scare has gone virtually unfilmed despite producing the longest and costliest American trial ever (and many slightly less ignominious episodes). It can't be comfortably reconciled with certain assumptions since deemed sacred, but there's also the practicality of it: how to believably portray something so ridiculous, rampant, recent? This subjective, fever-dreamy approach from the POV of a true believer doesn't really work but is kind of interesting as an experiment.
